I think that this is stupid move. Thurman was a stud 2 years ago. At least give him a chance to prove himself during camps.

I can't believe this, its beyond comprehension. Why in the world would the Bengals wait for Odell to reinstated if they were just going to cut him? This is pathetic. His grandmother passed thats why he missed last week. The team should have at least waited until they saw just what they had before cutting him.

I'd like to see Thurman file a grievance. profootballtalk.com was saying that the Bengals did this because he missed a week of VOLUNTARY workouts. He has been in Georgia because of the death of his grandmother. Its not like he was just skipping because he wanted to. My last job gave me 5 paid days off after the death of my grandmother. The Bengals had nothing but good things to say about Thurman when he was reinstated and that he could be a big factor later in the season. So this is a total shock to me.

I'm not surprised by the final outcome re: Thurman. I think Lewis was losing patience with him last year, and he had always said, "Odell will be welcome back...if he complies with the conditions of his reinstatement." And let's be honest, Thurman had never really shown himself to be a very dependable person. He had 4 things that lead to his 2 year suspension: 1 failed drug test, 1 missed drug test, 1 DUI, and 1 missed meeting with his PO. Two out of his four transgressions were failing to show up at a scheduled meeting...that's just lazy and stupid.
The Bengals spent time and money on him, but his behavior gave the Bengals reason not to trust him as far as keeping his nose clean, showing up, being dependable, being responsible, etc. All of that PLUS he hadn't played for 2 years, so who knows what kind of condition he was in. If you can't trust a guy to show up for a meeting with his PO, what makes you think you can trust him to show up for a weight training session, or a film session, or trust him to fill his role in a defensive scheme, etc?
That being said, I am surprised by the timing. I thought they would have given him more time to get into game shape and give the coaches more time to work with him. At the very least I would have expected them to make this move leading up to a roster cut-down date. My only guess is that he really did something to p!ss someone off bad!

Marvin stated that he wasn't living up to expectations. What kind of expectations would you have of him considering the loss of a close family member? I don't feel like they have really given him a chance to prove anything. This makes no sense to me at all. Maybe more info will be released later.

I was told two weeks ago that there was more coming on Odell and I could expect to see him suspended again. So the excuse of missing time because of his grandmother's funeral may just be a smokescreen for the real reason for his release.

i agree with bowie...i think for the Bengals to just cut him out of nowhere means there is much more to this story than just a passed relative.
who do you want to believe? Marvin, who is pretty much forthright and honest, or a guy who has been in constant trouble with the team and the league? As much as I know it hurts to lose a possible contributor to this defense, I have to side with Marvin as he knows what is best for this team. And at this point, we don't need another distraction.

Theirs gotta be more to this. They seemed happy to take him back and wait out his suspensions. I definitely see soemthing else going on.
I hope he's doing good though and hasn't gotten into anymore shit for his sake.
He was still a badass! Good luck O'Dell!

Here is a quote from the story titled "Bengals cut Thurman," by Geoff Hobson from the Bengals' website:
Thurman didn't return to Cincinnati for workouts last week and apparently wasn't back Monday. Indications are that the Bengals weren't pleased with his attendance in the offseason workout program that also includes the installation of a new defense with a new linebackers coach.

I'm a little befuddled myself. Not sure why they felt the need to pull the trigger now, but I'll go along with kc and give the team the benefit of the doubt.

There has to be more to the story than missing some workouts - the Bengals could have dropped Odell any time in the last two years and it wouldn't have been a big deal, but now it doesn't make sense. Regardless, though - I think Marvin's finally found some huevos and is becoming the hard-line coach we all want. We'll just have to see how it translates on the field.

This is ridiculous, we're pretty much admitting defeat for this upcoming season. We lose Landon Johnson to the Panthers, so we could bring back Odell Thurman to take his place, right? Wrong. Say hello to another top 10 draft pick. Our defense just got that much worse.

Agreed with ochobuckeye78...
fair vs unfair..... We all agree that Chris Henry was treated fairly, because he had plenty of chances to prove himself PERIOD!!! Now I am seeing a lot of bengal fans saying they new it was going to happen to Odell, or he should had been cut because he missed two seasons, or the Bengals made a good decision because he was a problem child... OK.. but the meat of the matter is this guy was suspended for one year... then came back and was suspended for another year that technically it never was a specific reason why he was suspended a second time... Now for two years he does everything he suppose to do (Let this sink in ... TWO YEARS). He comes back with a different attitude, and then he has been out because his grandmother/mother dies, and you cut him because you feel he has not approached his attendance carefully... EVERYBODY PLEASE REALLY SIT BACK AND ANALYZE THIS SITUATION BEFORE SAYING THE MESSED UP COMMENTS... I feel so so so sorry for Odell right now. The guy never even got a chance!!!!!!!!!!!! Very bad decison.. Do not be surprised if he explodes on the field with another team. Another thing.. the reason why Odell agent is surprised they cut him is because what has happened to him within the last two weeks with his grandmother and also you would not think that everything Odell went through to get to this point, the bengals would not had did him this way.. AWFUL...
