West Virginia University basketball star Joe Alexander is said to be leaning toward turning professional rather than returning for his senior year of eligibility.

Projections from National Basketball Association talent scouts reportedly have the 6-foot-8, 230-pound forward going in the first round of the 2008 draft between the 13th and 17th overall picks.

I heard this on the news the other night but I also heard that if he returns for his Senior year they are picking him to go as possibly the #1 pick

In announcing several weeks ago that he was going to test NBA waters, Alexander said that his inclination at that time was to return to WVU for the 2008-09 season. But he said, "I'm looking forward to the experience of being able to work out for some NBA teams."

He noted that he and coach Bob Huggins already had talked extensively and were dealing with the matter together. He also has been discussing the situation with his parents. All will have some input.

Here is why Huggy will pull in the recruits to WVU......

Huggins, who has coached more than 30 future NBA payers during his 26-year career, has said he and his assistant coaches will be very supportive of what the prized pupil decides to do. It was under Huggins' tutoring  this past season that he made incredible improvement.

good luck Joe with whatever decision you make but I would love to see you return

Wouldn't there be a substantial difference in $$ going from a 13th-17th pick to being a lottery pick?

I would love to see Joe come back for his senior year for purely selfish reasons.  But, I think an investment of one year in college may pay rich dividends if he can make the jump to the #1 pick in the 09 draft.  That would be a no brainer for me.

i can remember when the season ended that i posted that Joe would be a serious contender for the wooden award and people outside of the WVU family scoffed at that notion.

The kid has an inside out game unseen in many kids his age and his development has only begun.

I'd like to see him back. Here is the telltale sign that will show if he is going to the NBA or not -- when he goes to Orlando for the NBA Tryouts (ie measurements and combine-like challenges), if he decides NOT to participate in the actual scrimmages, he is GONE. if he plays, then it is likely that the NBA talking heads have not told him that he will definitely go mid-first round.

The way the NBA is set up, Alexander should go.  I hate to say this but as a rookie, he will earn better than 1M.  The top pick should make close to 4M.  I would expect that Alexander would get about 10M less than the top pick (Beasley) for the first 4 years of the Rookie contract.
At this point, it may look good for Alexander to stay with the possibility he will go higher next year.  However, the NBA contract structure makes it so you don't make the big bucks until your 5th year (Carmello Anthony 13 M this year).   Getting to your 5th year in the NBA while you are one year younger gives one more year to produce at big bucks.  The pay bump in that year should more than make up for his lower initial earnings over the first 4 years.

Even if Joe becomes a lottery pick next year, his lifetime earnings will be greater if he turns pro this year.

Yeah, I agree with you assessment anotherwvu, but that is predicated on going in the top 20 picks. There is considerably less guaranteed money for players outside the top 20ish picks.

The 20 pick to the one pick is not as much a pay jump as late first round this year to mid lottery next year.

It all depends on where they are projecting him and what they say are his areas for improvement. Some things can't be improved, but ball handling, passing, and shot range are improved greatly with hard work, especially for a kid who has only played what 6 years of organized ball.

There is a possibility that he really wants to try to go for some team success, like BE title run or perhaps more. That is not an enticement for everyone, but it definately plays a part for some.
