The racing prime of a horse is between 3 and 4 years old. Anytime you see a horse older than 6 years old racing the results generally are not good. As much as I would like to see horses have long, successful racing careers, it is very rare. Their bodies can't take it.
Probably, as you might guess, owners don't want to have extremely successful males on the track that long because of the potentially big money in the breeding shed. However, most really good horses that stay on the track after they turn 7 are usually running for less money than they were when they were 4 even though they technically can run in races where the conditions are "3 year olds and upward".
