I really appreciate what Terry Francona did here.  As much as I love to hate on the Red Sox, they just showed that they also have some class.  Francona was able to look past the bitter rivalry, and ask Girardi to come onto the coaching staff.

The big question here is what happens when Willie Randolph gets fired?

slapshot, I have 2 points to make in response to your post:

  1. Francona knows as well as anybody who knows the truth that this rivalry is overrated and totally blown waay out of proportion by the media, through the modern brand of ESPNism. The Red Sox are rivals but not bitter enemies like the media wants you to believe. The majority of people not living on the East coast will tell you that they are sick and tired of seeing Yankees-Red Sox everywhere they go. Nowadays, I think the biggest rivalry would have to be the Mets and the Phillies, or the Cubs and the Cardinals
  2. Everyone is talking about how Willie Randolph is going to ge fired - this is also a rumor amplified by the media. His job security is still good, and the Mets are not too far behind; they can still catchup, but they have made a few too many offensive/defensive blunders that have cost them games. Unless Randolph doesn't win more than 84 games, expect him to keep his job.
