Billy Wagner is no racist. Sure he called out Oliver Perez for pitching like garbage, but I am sure he would do the same thing to John Maine too. Its who he is, he makes not only himself but everyone else in the Mets clubhouse respondsible for their actions or non actions
I think it is more racist of the people who write these stories. As it is a non-story until they make it racist. Take away the racial background of all players involved and all you have is one player saying exactly what we all think.
That's your current 25 man Mets roster. 13 latinos, 12 non-latinos with 10 white players.
Yea practically the whole mets teams is constructed of latino players. Idiots.
Please stop with this being a latin thing already.
over fifty percent of the mets roster ios made up of latinos....so theres a greater chance that wagner would point at a latin player than another player if blindfolded........13 latinos 10 caucasians and 2 of other race......that mean that over 50% of the mets roster is latino.....which would be most of the mets roster.......what really irks me though are the players that have been in the majors for 7 plus seasons and still cant speak english....thats pathetic....manny ramirez David OrtizVladimir Guerrero hideo nomo ichiro just to name a few....if any of us moved to japan for our job would we not be required to learn to speak japanese???? or if we moved to the domican....would we not be required to learn spanish.......if you ask me not bothering to learn the language is as much racism as saying they left early after a loss......i live in florida and we have a very high latino population....i can myself speak spanish quite fluently....but i flat refuse to while im at work...if you cant ask me a question in enlish or at least try too......your pathetic....learn the language.....lazy....period.
Before we go off on the learning English issue, find out how many American born or Latino players who have had long careers in Japan speak Japanese fluently. The numbers are far less, but it happens. For me, it's a non-issue. It's their choice to choose to take up residence in a country and choose to limit their ability to effectively communicate.
For a player, who only plays here, but returns to his native country in the offseason, as long as they can communicate enough to understand coaching instruction and execute game wise, I have no problem with them being unable to speak to the media. Many who choose to, can barely be understood at times due to their accent.
As I stated before, Billy Wagner said absolutely nothing to make it an issue of ethnicity. Neither should we.
What little I know about this or care to know is connected to the reporters who cover the team.
These guys can ask some brutal questions. They are looking for new angles instead of the same old same old. Wagner and other guys in the clubhouse do weary of the dumb, inane questions.
He says something "different" and suddenly a reporter has a "new angle" to take back to his laptop.
I'd mostly cut him some slack. I am sure the team isn't really as affected by this as we might want to think. New York is a tough town to play.
If you remember, last year the same thing happened to Paul Laduca. It is all about reporters trying to start a story.
Abd to be honest, Perez did suck until last night. Reyes, Beltran, etc do evade questions. Though, Reyes seems to speak english when promoting MLB2008. The only people on the team that you see talking after a win or loss is Randolph, Wright, Church, Schneider and Wagner. And starting pitchers on their day.
When Pedro is healthy he is always available. so it is not that all latinos won't talk.
Did anyone notice that Perez pitched his heart out last night and that Delgado was talking to the press after the game. Somehow that tells me that the met clubhouse may have listened to Wagner. Again, the press is making a big deal of it but I don't think the clubhouse is.
BTW- Bucc, your language comments could easily be called racist.
Whew, I was thinking that y'all forgot about how the media twists quotes to create drama!! Is this not America, home of the reality show?! Cut B-Wags some slack -- sounds like some of you are supporting racism - creating the blogs about how many of this type and how many of that type. I do know one thing for sure, there are a lot of the 'talented' type on the team...
What pisses me off is that right after the team settles down, plays its best baseball of the season, and seems to be on the right track... Willie goes spouting off. The guy keeps his composure for 6 months of mediocre baseball, and decides to open his mouth right when things look up? Jesus. What a fool. Get him out of NY.
