BTW,  ND Board of Trustees met earlier this month and the leak about Memphis occured on May 13/14 and, if I'm not mistaken, the conferences are currently having their meetings.

ND is in a world of hurt right now.  They want to control their own destiny, but don;t have the record over the past three years to do that.  Calling on the religious zealots to act on their behalf won't work in the NCAA any more.

Yes ND demands a large TV audience, normally.  But over the past three years that market share has shrunk.    As most people are saying, no exclusive ND big bucks contracts are coming due now.  They are now officially a middle of the road team.  It's time they look to the future and join a conference.  I don't care which conference right now either.  Big Ten, Big East, Big Sky for all that matters... They stink and can't draw enough interest to get any big name recruits right now.

It's really sad if you think about it.  I mean how many big name players are coming from Catholic high schools... ND should have the automatic recruiting advantage here, but don't back it up on the field right now.  Too bad for them, but good for the BCS conference schools.   So one team's failures lead to other teams better recruiting, who could argue with that....

You say that like secretly, every conference in the country would be frothing @ the mouth to get ND in.  You think the SEC would say "No, we're just gonna keep South Carolina." or any conference would turn down the Irish?  Why do you think the Big East lets them participate in every sport other than the big cash one...at THEIR request?

ND isn't what it was in the past, but with the increased number of college football fans, I'd venture to say that the overall number of ND fans hasn't gone down dramatically.  You watch what happens IF IF IF they put together a solid season.  Anyone and everyone will be all over the "Irish revival."

The dirty secret is, ND sits back and laughs @ all the prognosticators that think they're going anywhere anytime soon.  Stroking the ego of Memphis fans isn't gonna change that one bit.

Actually, the word "Hokie" comes from a cheer they used during the early days.  When I first started being a WV fan in the 60's, they were the "Gobblers" and they will always be turkeys to me.  The Benedict Arnold University turkeys

MB

The Exhaustive Oxford Dictionary of the English language doesn't have that noted at all. The only noted caveat is, "a nickname for the VPTU&SU athletic teams". No mention of a turkey whatsoever. And Franklin made a statement about the cunning intelligence of the wild turkey as a most difficult game animal to be able to shoot with a flintlock. But he never proposed any legistlature to make it the official symbol of America. However, the black bear and the mountain lion were considered and voted on. I'm glad the eagle won. I like hunting bear and the Eastern lion has been extinct at least from 1850, definitely by the end of the Civil War.

"My prediction?  Memphis gets in, backed by the basketball schools, East Carolina and UCF get in as a quid pro quo or due to the ECU's supposed generous offer, and the BE picks up another D1AA graduate like UMass, Villanova, or Georgetown.  We can leave that spot open for awhile for those who would like to Penn St. or Boston College join up (myself included).  But I don't see it happening"

Graystork,

Are you aware that Villanova made a big stink in the early 80's about becoming the "Notre Dame of the East"? How'd that one turn out? Ever see there campus/stadium? Even if they could expand to seat 15,000 (D1A minimum), you'd have to park in King of Prussia and take a bus! Georgetown plays in the Patriot League struggling against the likes of Lehigh and Bucknell. UMass does well in the Colonial League and 1AA. However, Delaware has been continually been a AA contender/champ with stable attendance records above 20,000. They are in the same situation that UConn was a few years ago. They are wanting to get to the BE.

I like the Academies being independent. They are truly every Americans' team and being able to schedule and play around the country benefits them in recruiting, even if they are overmatched sometimes. They both do well in other sports in the Patriot League.

Yo Teddy.

I agree that most conferences would love to add ND. ...except the SEC. The southeast is the area of the country that ND is least popular...maybe becasue outside of Louisiana, the southest is almost entirely protestant. Maybe if ND was located in Atlanta...lol.

The best fit, by far IMO, would be ND to the Big Ten. They fit perfectly geographically, athletically, academically, and clout-wise--all of which are important to the B10.

By the way, the clock is ticking to the time when ND will have to join a conference as they will be losing those special ND-only BCS rights.
