With Eric Byrnes in a terrible slump, batting in the low 100s in May, does Bob Melvin put him in the 8 spot?

My opinion, is that Byrnes has 2 games against the Rockies to get a few hits together, and if nothing happens he's the most expensive 8 hitter in baseball when the Tigers come.

Tough call, I thought about the same thing and concluded that to drop him in the 8 hole might only serve to destroy his confidence even more. I think it better that he were benched a couple to a few games if he continues at this pace. What if he hits 8th and still can't hit, then he is practically done. So..bench him, let him study tapes some, take more batting practice.

Also, is there even the slightest chance that his eyesight might not be as strong? I'm serious, perhaps he has something physical going on? But that is why I think he needs at least one entire series off.

I think that Eric Byrnes needs to get his head back into baseball as well. Put aside all the radio and TV work for a while with the Eric Byrnes Show and BDSS and focus on his real job - being the leader of the best, currently, team in baseball. He has so much going on outside of the game that it seems like he is already burned out and worn down just 1/4 of the way through the season.

I know he is one of those guys that wants to be in the line up every day and make a difference, but right now that difference is a negative one. Last night going 0-4 with the bases loaded twice and only getting one runner in, very inneffective right now and you can see that he is not confident at all at the plate. Bob Melvin should bench him for a couple of games - let Kirk Gibson and Rick Shu work with his mechanics during the Detroit Tigers series and hopefully come back with legs rested and working well and confidence rising. Look at what a few days rest did for Orlando Hudson, maybe that is all Byrnsie needs as well.

Besides Melvin has always been one of those - I am not going to play you every day for the season, so maybe it is time to let Jeff Salazar spot Byrnes for a few games. Yes you could put Byrnes in the 8 hole, but his confidence is bad enough with all the lineup spots he has already dropped in the last week.

Wonder if he is trying to hard to live up to his new contract and thinking too much about the game instead of letting his insticts and abilities play for him?

The guy is pressing....big time!

Eric Byrnes has more at stake than many of the other players. If Byrnes is benched for an extended period....there goes his lucrative 'side-jobs'. Nothing people want to watch less than a baseball player who sits on the bench....so they goes his TV shows.

Byrnes needs to be placed on the 15 day DL and just forget about hitting for a week or so. He's put in extra time in the batting cage and it hasn't helped.

Of course he could go 4 for 4 today.......................

The Diamondbacks did give Eric Byrnes a day off tonight. Everyone's favorite player, Jeff Salazar, played instead and went 0-4 with 3 K's.

If Byrnes hits 8th, he won't see that many good pitches to hit. That might not be good for him. He is not that disciplined of a hitter, which means a lot of strikeouts ahead of the pitcher. Chris Burke hit 8th today because regular first baseman Conor Jackson was out with a sore right hamstring.

While CoJack is out, I would like to see Burke hit 8th. He does not strike out much, and he is a good contact hitter with decent speed. Burke went 2-3 with a steal hitting 8th today.

Usually it's Jeff Salazar having the good outing and Chris Burke with the big o'fer.  Must have been opposite day.  But good to see Burke do something at the plate since he's so versitale in the field.

Nice to see Chris Burke with some hits last night. Maybe that is what he will need to become more relible off the bench. Maybe the thing to do now for the Diamondbacks is to put Eric Byrnes at DH for the Tigers series and leave Jeff Salazar in to play defense. This way Byrnes can focus on only one aspect of the game - hitting for a couple of days. Plus chances are good that the Detroit Tigers pitchers will forget what they are doing - like during the beginning of the season and allow for Byrnes to have a solid weekend.

No DH will be used - only in American League parks.

Gary Sheffield will be sitting ....which will please most Tiger fans.
