We all saw and had our opinions on the pre-season list that SI published, listing the 20 20 Young Pitchers for the 2008 season.  Let's revisit the list and see just how they are performing compared to expectations.  They are listed in order as SI rated them.  Any surprises?  Any that you expected to underperform this year?

1.  Justin Verlander - Detroit Tigers  1-6   6.43 ERA

2.  Fausto Carmona - Cleveland Indians  4-1  2.40 ERA

3.  Cole Hamels - Philadelphia Phillies  4-3  3.36 ERA

4.  Scott Kazmir - Tampa Bay Rays  1-1  2.70 ERA

5.  Felix Hernandez - Seattle Mariners  2-4  3.38 ERA

6.  Francisco Liriano - Minnesota Twins  Sent to minors on 4/25

7.  Joba Chamberlain - New York Yankees  1-2  2.76 ERA

8.  Jered Weaver - Anaheim Angels  2-5  4.86 ERA

9.  Tim Lincecum - San Francisco Giants  5-1  1.61 ERA

10.  Jon Lester - Boston Red Sox  2-2  4.06 ERA

11.  Phil Hughes - New York Yankees  0-4  9.00 ERA

12.  Homer Bailey - Cincinatti Reds  Sent to minors on 3/26

13.  Jeremy Bonderman - Detroit Tigers  2-4  4.80 ERA

14.  Clay Buchholz - Boston Red Sox  2-3  5.53 ERA

15.  Chad Billingsley - Los Angeles Dodgers  2-5  4.89 ERA

16.  Matt Garza - Tampa Bay Rays  2-1  3.86 ERA

17.  Yovani Gallardo - Milwaukee Brewers  0-0  1.80 ERA

18.  Matt Cain - San Francisco Giants  2-3  4.17 ERA

19.  Tom Gorzelanny - Pittsburgh Pirates  3-3  5.97 ERA

20.  Ubaldo Jimenez - Colorado Rockies  1-3  5.53 ERA

4 earned runs in 20 innings of work. . .

. . .and 2 of those runs came after he shredded his ACL

You Milwaukeeans should storm the Brewer front office en masse and dont leave until Ned Yost's head is on a stake.   Young phenom ace crumples in a heap after landing oddly on his leg and you toss him out there for two more????  We're lucky he didnt compensate for the ailing knee and rip his arm out.

I dont usually call for violence but these are desperate times.  At the very least, if the head on the stake thing is too gory, hold him down and tear his ACL then force him to throw 35 pitches.  Maybe he'll learn his lesson.

Only three of these pitchers have winning records- Fausto Carmona, Cole Hamels, and Tim Lincecum. Out of all of the pitchers, Lincecum has performed the best, Carmona and Hamels have done well, but unlike Lincecum, they are somewhat protected by the Phillies and Indians good offense.

I'm surprised that SI picked the third best young Reds pitcher on there list.

I suppose they have never heard of or considered Johnny Cueto or Edinson Volquez...

Volquez has 8 straight starts in which he has given up 1 ER....better than most.

Its obvious SI left quite a number of better young arms off the list.  Every team could probably name one or two they have that could make a better case than some of these 20.  For my Royals, Joakim Soria and Zach Greinke are missing.

No they just didn't deserve to be on there.
My point being....they do now.  Grienke 2nd in the AL in ERA among starting pitchers.  Soria, 9 saves and only remaining AL closer with a 0.00 ERA.   Can you list 20 young pitchers more deserving than that yahoosam?
