How many poor starts do we have to see out of pitchers who are notoriously good starters, before we question the ability of the pitching coach to make adjustments?

I haven't seen Brad Penny look any worse in my life.  Derek Lowe can't get past the 5th, must less be an innings-eater.  Chad Billingsley doesn't seem like he has turned the corner.  Kuroda pitches well but always runs into a wall around the 6th, and I won't blame him for the 5th starter.

The only reason Honeycutt remained on the team was because the Dodgers brass didn't want to change the coaching make-up too much.  In addition, Dodgers pitching has been good under Honeycutt.  But we forget, it was good because the pitchers were good.

I'm not used to watching the Dodgers give up in excess of 5 runs a game.  I was much more content with Dave Wallace, Jim Colborn, and to take it one step further, Ron Perranoski.

My dream would be to have Orel Hershiser take over as pitching coach.  He is far and away the smartest guy working at ESPN, and I've always admired the man.  He was in the same capacity for the pitching-handicapped Rangers before stepping down.  I'm not sure if he'd want to do it again, but I would be all for it.

Orel Hershiser would be, in your words, a dream.  What a great dream, not the best dream, but a great dream.  I would be all for that, and would love to see that come to fruition.  Could you imagine though if the pitchers went into a bigger tailspin than they are in right now?  If they had to fire the great Orel hershiser, the same organization who let him go play for the Giants and Indians?  I am still ticked off about that.

Anyways here are the in house options...

Las Vegas 51's -- Jim Slaton -- 16 MLB seasons (Brewers, Tigers, Angels..117 W's)

Jacksonville Suns -- Glenn Dishman -- 3 MLB Seasons (up and down throughout)

IE66ers -- Charlie Hough -- 25 MLB seasons (216 wins 78th all time)

Grea Lake Loons -- Danny Darwin -- 21 MLB Seasons (most notably with Houston)

Ogden Raptors -- Craig Bjornson -- 3 minor league seasons (never above A)

GCL Dodgers -- Casey Deskins -- 5 minor league seasons (3 of those with Dodgers)

Two Words.... Leo Mazzone...he was fantastic in Atlanta... Baltimore was bad... but I think he could turn it around in Dodger Blue... I also think he'd be great with the young kids... there were no pitchers more mechanically sound than Maddux, Glavine, and Smoltz..and he had a part in that.

I like Honeycutt..but I wouldn't be too sad if he was fired.

So do we agree that Honeycutt should at least be scrutinized?

the same organization who let him go play for the Giants and Indians?
Seeing him in a Giants uniform was painful  Don't forget, he also pitched for the Mets, but retired as a Dodger.

The pitchers themselves just have not pitched well lately. I think they are just having concentration problems or the second time through the order hitters are adjusting. They are also getting behind in counts leaving the hitters to get a good bat on the ball.

Blaming coaches for players not performing is somewhat overrated. Let's fire our hitting coach for Andruw Jones not hitting.

As for Leo Mazzone, I'd be a Hall of Fame type pitching coach if I had Maddux, Glavine, and Smoltz on my staff. What about that Atlanta bullpen that never really had much and consistantly blew it for them in the playoffs. 1 Championship with 3 hall of fame starters. Leo is overrated.
