Adam Rubin of the NY Daily News writes:

"Forget Johan Santana. John Maine is arguably the Mets’ ace. He’s won four straight – all following a Mets loss. And since his season debut in Atlanta, he hasn’t allowed more than two runs in any outing.

The two runs or fewer allowed in seven straight games is the longest streak by a Met since Masato Yoshii did it in eight straight in 1999.

Maine is making $450,000 this year, and is arbitration-eligible after the season for the first time. With Oliver Perez very likely bolting after the season as a free agent and Pedro Martinez and Orlando Hernandez’s nearing the finish line, locking up Maine for the long term now might be a good idea.

Maine won’t be a free agent until after the 2011 season, though, so don’t fret too much about that topic."

I tend to agree that locking up Maine would be a smart move!

I wouldn't give Maine a long term deal till after the season ends but they definately should sign the guy after the season ends. He could be the 1A ace along with Santana which would ultimately give the Mets the best 1/2 punch in BB. It's so funny that this guy was just a throw in for the Kris Benson deal and now he is being thought of as an ace. How badly does Balt. want to take that deal back? Probably about as much as the Mets would like Kazmir back!

I'm pretty sure that Maine will see a Jose Reyes/D Wright type of extension some time between the all star break and the end of this season.  I've been excited about John Maine as a Mets fan since the middle of last season.  What I like most?  His calm cool demeanor before a game and the effortless way it seems he pitches.  Fantastic.  One might call it a bit of a man-crush.

One question.  Why is it impossible to find a John Maine replica jersey (don't have the money to drop 1/4 K on a Jersey)???  All I can find is the pin stripe one and last I check, John Maine did not play before the year 2000 when the "official" pinstripe jersey became sparingly used.

I say lock him in!   And As far as Johan Santana is concerned......   he'll come around,  and he isn't doing so bad anyways.... it's Maine, Perez, and Santana keeping our heads above water right now....they need help!

Santana has been good, but Maine has been better.  We need to lock him up long term.  It would be nice to see Santana and Maine as our 1-2 for the next 5 yrs.

Maine is the only Met that has actually done ne thing (pitching wise) and with him finally the offense is actually getting help. I dont know why you guys want to keep johan hes an aging bum and has been  A HUGE disappointment this year, while gomez is arguably the AL MVP right now....They need to scrap johan and give the rotation to Maine n Pelfrey

Santana and Maine stats are very close, but Santana is the Ace, make no mistake about that. If Maine can repeat last season, and so far he is, then he has earned that long term deal.

As for the off season we have to sign 3 SP. Options are getting slim... FA C.C. Sabathia and John Lackey will be to much money, but A.J. Burnett, Jon Garland, and Ben Sheets should be courted along with resigning Perez and maybe Pedro for 1 yr.

Both have 8 Gs and 6 QS

  • Santana:  4-2 3.10ERA
  • Maine: 5-2 2.81ERA

  • Santana: 52 K 13 BB
  • Maine: 38 K 22 BB

  • Santana: 45 Hits allowed
  • Maine:  38 Hits allowed

  • Santana: 8.94 Kper9
  • Maine: 7.12 Kper9

  • Santana: 1.11 Whip
  • Maine: 1.25 Whip

  • Santana:  8 HR allowed
  • Maine: 4 HR allowed

  • Santana: .226 BAA
  • Maine: .213 BAA

great stats Tartans!  One correction, you Bolded the wrong WHIP.  Santana clearly has the lead in WHIP.

NYFan59 - I keep telling myself not to respond... but your posts are incorrigible.  Santana has a 3.1 ERA with no run support or BP help.  He had one bad game (his home opener) with 4 HRs.  Out of his 8 games started, instead of 4-2, the guy should be 6-1 or 7-1 (BP blowing games).  He has a loss in a game he gave up 1 run.  2 games where he gave up 2 runs and got no decision.  and he still manages to have 4 wins.  His ERA of a 3.1 is decent, and will continue to get better as he has in the past proven to need a month to warm up.

As for Gomez being MVP of the AL currently?  Crack Much?  AVG: 2.75, R, 24 (good) 3 HR, SB 16 (impressive), 39 Ks (over 1 per game bad for a non power hitter) OBP .304.  Hes playing well for them, and will continue to get better, but MVP?  Please!
