I admit, when this rule first came into effect I was for it. I don't know what I was thinking. IT makes no sense to me to force kids to go to college for one year. What is the point? The baseball system is better than this. But the old NBA system was even better. Let them leave any time they want after H.S. They're adults after all.
Why should they be forced to go to school? This stupid system doesn't exist in any other country. What happens if the kid gets injured? He will lose millions of dollars. If he leaves early for the NBA and doesn't get drafted and ends up washed up, well, that's his fault for leaving. Maybe it sounds harsh, but isn't this the reality in many other areas of life.
It is not that I don't value education. I am a teacher. But, putting in a one year rule to prop up college basketball (which I prefer greatly to the NBA) is unfair to the young adult athletes that are forced to go to school for a year. Isn't this unconstitutional somehow? Age discrimination?
Now, I realize that people have good intentions to help kids from being deceived into entering the draft when they shouldn't. But most of us don't have people watching our backs to see whether or not we make a good career choice out of H.S. Why is that the job of the NBA? Shouldn't that be a family responsibility? But really, if they do make it why should they go to school anyway? To be well rounded? sure. But, as far as being set for their future isn't allowing them to enter anytime really best for qualified kids(adults)? I think we could learn from the rest of the world on this issue.
