Falling into the "Did You Know?" category is something that took place in an otherwise routine blowout on Saturday at Nationals Park.
Lost in the Marlins' 11-0 win over the Nationals that night was the fact that Cody Ross scored twice on wild pitches. On the surface it doesn't seem like much, but it actually is a pretty rare occurrence.
The last time the same player scored twice in the same game on wild pitches was over six years ago.
On April 25, 2002, Felipe Lopez, then with the Blue Jays, scored twice on wild pitches.
Ross scored his runs in the third and fourth innings. Both times he walked. In the third, he raced home on Michael O'Connor's wild pitch. An inning later, Matt Chico's pitch that got away from Jesus Flores had Ross charging home.
"When I went over the game in my head, I said, 'I scored two runs on wild pitches,'" Ross said. "That doesn't happen a lot.
"I honestly thought it happened more than six years ago. I thought it would happen a couple of times a year, maybe.
"I thought I saw Hanley [Ramirez] do it, but obviously I hadn't."
