already hurt. Don't really care about Woodson at this point, but I and I think some others are hoping that Manningham becomes a steal of the draft and plays first round worthy. Then again, we always draft a wide out in the 2+ rounds who has all this upside only to get disappointed one way or another in the coming season.
Manningham didnt seem to be too worried about the injury..so im not worried in the least.
As far as projections, Im of the belief that the Giants got a STEAL! He might be dumb, but the Wonderlic test is overrated IMO. Maybe not this year...but I think Mannigham will become the #2 to Plax..with Steve Smith being more of the #3 slot guy...Smith witll be the Manning security blanket once Toomer retires and Plax and Manningham will give the DBs nightmares
Either way..great pickup and we have some sick depth at the WR this year.
Wonderlic is far more relevant for offensive linemen, TEs and FBs than it is for WR. As long as he can step his game up for the pro level Manningham will be a great receiver. All he did at Michigan was make big plays against some tough competition. People like to talk about his lack of speed but forget that he was the guy breaking off the huge plays in the pass game. He is a decent route runner, and reminds me of another great Michigan WR who lacked speed. He holds the record for receptions and yards for the Giants and his name is Amani Toomer.
Well put, disaster. After they picked up Manningham, my first thought was, "they're developing Amani Toomer Jr." I don't know how Manningham will start this year, but in the next 1-2 years, Toomer will retire and Mario will take his spot on the depth chart.
I don't care if Woodson gets hurt. His role will be fairly irrelevent for the first few years of his career, anyway.
Manningham will be a very different type of receiver than Amani Toomer, in that he lacks Toomer's size (6-3, 208 - Manningham is 5-11, 183) and game sense. Before I get accused of making any comparisons to Jerry Rice, I will say that Rice had some of the same knocks against him that Manningham had (doesn't have great separation, lacks game-changing speed) but the game film says otherwise. To read a scouting report on Manningham, you wonder how he made even one reception. Doesn't have great speed, route-running is suspect, needs to add strength to beat press coverage, has a "prima donna" attitude...I personally think the best way to gauge a player or person in general on what they will do in the future is on what they did in the past. If you watch his game film, especially in big games against good defensive teams and players, he always seems to perform and very often looked like the best player on the field. I hope he becomes a legitimate threat on the outside. I think Steve Smith will become that quintessential third receiver, with great route-running skill, good hands, and toughness. With Burress on one side as a big target, Manningham might become that home run threat opposite him that Toomer is not - similar to what a healthy Terry Glenn was to Dallas opposite TO.
Great points Hawk, made me think of how long Amani will keep going. I'd say 2 years tops, barring injury. It will be sad when he hangs them up, because he's had a great and interesting career, and I will always remember him for his reliability and professionalism.
I like and see Smith developing more into Amani's role opposite Plaxico. I think Mario is suited for in the slight to stretch the D down the middle..
Barring Injury, such as we've seen the past two years to Moss and Smith, Manningham should get enuf playing time to have 30+ catches and put some points on the board for us. Unlike past pix such as Stephen Baker, Ike Hilliard, Lionel Manuel, Mark Ingram, etc. Manningham will have a productive career and surprise us all. Nothing against former picks, but none ever emerged as gamebreakers. We have one of the premier O lines in the NFL and a quarterback who can ruin your weekend, if your on the opposing side. I think Eli should be able to get Mario the Rock!!
