I like the hire. I think Avery is an insprirational coach, but I'm not sure he has enough of the X's and O's to get the Mavericks over the hump.  Now it's all about how Donnie Nelson can mold the roster this off-season.  Can he work some Magic and put the Mavs back on top?

i think they be alot better with him at the coaching spot but we gotta do better picking free agents. Center and small forward spot is killing our team.

Mavs don't have the money to pick up a lot of crazy free agent acquisitions.

Josh is the most valuable trade piece. I don't know what the Mavs could get with him, but getting rid of all the older guys for more fresh legs and a legit 2-guard would be a great start.

Dampier isn't going anywhere, but he benefitted as much as Dirk from having Kidd around. Hopefully that Damp will show up all next season.

dampier isnt going anywhere how much u wanna bet hes gone next year cuban dislikes him he sucks ass and hes like 40 years old hes been in the league for like 16 seasons we will trade him for nothing maybe draft picks and we will probably make magliore the center i dont see y hes not starting anyway hes younger a previous all star and hes more athletic

howard isnt going anywhere imo hes too good perfect complement to dirk i think they try and trade their bench for younger guys

nyjets2006,

Here's the Mavs guaranteed salaries before the off-season starts.

http://hoopshype.com/salaries/dallas.htm

They have no "bench" to trade as it stands. Brandon Bass is not going anywhere. The Mavs will also be over the cap, which means that each new role player they acquire is only going to cost Cuban even more than they should in the first place. Maybe Cuban is willing to pony up the money for a full season of Kidd, but that could get expensive fast.

Also, look at Dampier's salary. He's got two years guaranteed of $10 million salary and then a third year of $13 MILLION! I think we can all agree, fans or not, that Dampier isn't worth that. I have no idea which team would want to throw money away to get him on their roster. If he had just one year, or maybe two, he could be good midseason trade bait, but he has three. If only Isiah was still in charge of the Knicks could Dampier be moved without forcing his contract on someone in a deal including Josh. Also, there are plenty of guys more willing to drive to the hoop than Josh. The Mavs probably could have easily gotten someone like Monta Ellis and draft picks for Josh last year, but now, no way would that deal go down.

Carlisle has his work cut out for him, but the Mavs are at least a season away from really getting back to the caliber they can be, imo.

You are an idiot your saying all this crap bout dampier being so old with 16 seasons kidd has 13 seasons he aint to young either we need to try and trade howard then pick up a young point guard and a center with some good defense

ur the idiot melvin if u watched the carlise conference then u heard him say we are keeping howard he sed hes too important so all  u ppl can forget about trading howard carrlisle loves him and hes staying there only shot is trading damp for nothing or stacks contract for any value wat so ever other than that our bench suks and arent worth anything bass is staying put

and as for kidd am i the only one whos sees him play imo he can still play he can still run the floor hes still pretty fast the only problem is he cant shoot to save his life or post up but carlisle also sed that kidd will run the off next year i agree hes only got like 2 years left but dont say that hes got only 1/2 a year left thats just being stupid

i agree we need a pg for the future obvioulsy kidd isnt it so the question is who do we get

if free agency is out bc we cant afford anything where do we go.  i think the draft is out too we will only have late round picks and cant do much with that unless we package up picks and players for early picks

I think Kidd can still play. He's going to make some bad turnovers now and then, but if the coaches work the offense to suit him, instead of being saddled into Avery's old, static offense, then the offense is going to look crisp.

And the Mavs can still put up 100 points in a game pretty easy. It's just when everyone starts playing isolated, jump-shooting ball that the shots can start bricking quick. Mavs always look best when someone is going in and tossing it out for a three than when someone is just standing on the three, waiting for the clock to wind down, then chucking up the ball.

If Josh can remember how to drive to the basket, if he can work with Kidd instead of sulking over Devin being gone, then I'm all for it. But if not, I think the trade deadline will be where the Mavs make their most important moves.

Chaz... I'm not so sure that waiting until the trade deadline is the answer though. I think one of the big problems last year was that Kidd didn't really have time to "gel" with his new teammates. PG is the QB on offense. And he needed more time to get the offense down.

As for back up PG, I am real intested to see what Barrea brings in next year. He showed me some toughness in his 1st season.

Also I'd really like to see Damp either get more chances to shoot the ball, or come of the bench. I don't know if it was Avery that was holding him back. I know that his last
