Who will lead the Braves in saves this season?

Through 35 games:

Acosta = 2 Saves

Jeff Bennett = 1 Save

Soriano = 1 Save

Peter Moylan = 1 Save

I voted for John Smoltz, but in all honesty I think Mike Gonzalez will do great in the closer spot. I have major concerns about Smoltzie's shoulder going the rest of the season, with muscle problems and rotator cuff issues.

 I also have concerns with Gonzo coming back from Tommy John surgery, it might take a month or so even after he gets back in the bullpen before he cuts it loose to see what he can really do. Most pitchers coming back from that surgery usually are tentative about throwing hard; but once they realize that the surgery has healed and they don't have any problems, most report that they throw harder than before the surgery.

I think it comes down to smoltz or gonzalez. I pray that when these guys come back bobby cox takes acosta out of the closers spot, he just doesnt compare to smoltz or gonzalez. He does ok for maybe a 1/3 of an inning and gives up key hits to allow runners to score.

I think when Mike Gonzalez gets back he is going to totally own the closer roll.

I'm not sold on "oh Smoltz wants to goto the bullpen so let him close.."  I hope that he's only out there 'til june or the all-star break.  The rotation realllllly needs him badly in my opinion.

We will either A) need smoltz back in the rotation after the all star break or b) trade for a hot and reliable #2 ASAP.

As much as I love Gonzalez or Soriano in the closer's spot, Smoltz (and Bobby Cox) has said he's coming back as a reliever, which means he'll probably be the closer. Does this mean he'll close every game, I don't think so. I think Gonzalez, Soriano or Acosta can fill in as often as once or twice a week depending on how Smoltz feels. If Smoltz doesn't feel 100 percent, he'll just be unavailable for that game. As much as I don't like this move, because the rotation isn't as strong (Hudson, Glavine, Jurrjens, Reyes, James, Hampton, maybe even Bennett or Carlyle from the pen too, and that's not a bad rotation either), it gives the Braves an amazing bullpen with Soriano, Gonzalez and Smoltz 7-8-9. If this plays out well, we could have a killer pen for the late season push.

You have to win close games to get saves.

There's no way you can't put Smoltzy in the closing role if you're Bobby.  He already has a career of 150+ saves, and rarely blows saves.  He's proven himself that he can be a starter or a closer.

I say Smoltzy is the best option in the closer's role; but the days that Smoltzy has just pitched you put Soriano or Gonzalez out.

- I sure wish we had Peter Moylan.  We would have the deepest bullpen in the majors.

The Braves have basically told the public that once Smoltz is healthy again he'll be their closer. That makes me say that he'll be at the top of the save heap.

Wow. That is a sad stat. I voted Smoltz by default.
