Penn State is a great university, but there are 10 other great universities in the BIG 10 and it will take more than a good reputation to attract the number of quality atheletes to be competitive in the conference.

Other then Michigan and MAYBE Ohio state, please dont compare any of the other schools in the big ten to penn state. Academically they are the strongest (along with michigan), they have one of the most historically storied programs in the past 50 years. And they have the largest amount of alumni of ANY school in the country, me counting as one of them.

From a pure academic standard, http://www.topuniversities.com/worlduniversityrankings/results /2007/overall_rankings/top_400_univ ersities/
- Northwestern
- Michigan
- Wisconsin
- Illinois
- Purdue
- Penn State
- Ohio State
- Indiana
- Minnesota
- Michigan State
- Iowa
All the Big 10 schools are outstanding academic institutions. The state of Pennsylvania has excellent universities; PENN is ranked 14th in the world academically, Pitt tied with Purdue at 77th, Penn State is 90th.
In this article I sense Joe Paternio's frustration in recruiting. It gives me the impression he knows he's losing recruits because of his age and declining ability to do his job. But, he feels recruits should choose Penn State regardless? Why should a recruit choose Penn State since Paternio is not as good of a coach, hasn't got a long term contract, and might not be at Penn State after next season. There are plenty of other good football/academic/historic schools with merit and competent coaches with longer term contracts than one year.

Jo Pa probably didn't lose a recruit using this method. Players aren't looking to there , so no gain, no loss.
When your incoming class ranks in the 60's in D1 , that says all you need to know about the school doing the recruiting for you.

JoePa is losing a little bit of his edge, but Penn State still have a very good football program with a great history and great coaching. Joepa does need to clear up on his recruiting though, there have been way to many off campus issues with players and bringing in good new players is important, and teaching these guys some values is even more important.

yeah come to penn state, a mediocre academic instutition. you can become a marginally productive member of society like the other fellow penn state alums who have found success in the big commercial capitols of the world such as allentown, erie, and scranton.

I'm a Spartan, but you need to realize that JoPa is a better coach then you admit. He already said he doesn't need a contract and he's one of the lowest paid 500k in his own words "because that's all I need" here's a coach with morals and not afraid to kick a player off his team or chase a ref down asking about a bad call at half time (against scUM a few years ago). He'll coach as long as he feels he's able to, whether that be 1 year or 20 years.

Normally I just read the posts on Paterno and don't really post much on it but......
His time in Happy Valley has been a great ride. He made PSU football what it is (or was, depending on what you feel the current state of the program is). I am in the school of thought that the program is in a downturn the last 10 years. I say that because the 70s, 80s, and 90s where such a great ride and finally some bumps in the road have taken some of the spotlight off the program.
Gun to my head, Paterno is gone after this season. I cannot see why the administration would truely want him to come back. I always thought that Paterno should've left in 1994 after the undefeated season. If not then, it definitely should've been 1999 when the team was ranked #1 for most of the season.
Someone made a comment about recruiting numbers, which I agree and disagree with. I don't look much into recruiting numbers. There are things that sway these recruiting rankings and how many 4/5 star athletes recruited ever amount to much in college....quite a bit (for PSU fans, see Austin Scott and Derrick Williams as examples of this). But a good point one can make is that PSU definitely does get the amount of top level recruits that they used to. And I haven't really done research on this, it just seems this way. More schools here in the east have become more viable football schools (see Maryland, Rutgers, Pitt, WVU). These schools for the most part were not very good in the late 80's and 90's, so PSU could pull recruits in from these regions with relative ease. Now its a much tougher sell....
