When the ACC men's basketball coaches meet this week, the Freon will be battling more than the humidity. The energy of the frustrated coaches will generate heat. For the second time in three years since the ACC expanded to 12 schools, just four of its teams were selected for the NCAA tournament. Despite having the highest conference RPI for 2007-08, the ACC received fewer NCAA bids than the Big East, Big 12, Pac-10 and SEC. The disappointment has prodded some action. ACC Commissioner John Swofford has sent a letter to the Division I men's basketball committee requesting that conference strength be added to the list of criteria considered when the NCAA tournament field is selected. Coaches say they plan to remind the media more often next season about the conference's strength. Virginia Tech's Seth Greenberg and Wake Forest's Dino Gaudio are open to considering an 18-game conference schedule. A year ago, the ACC committed to a 16-game schedule through 2010-11 because coaches resisted the idea of 18 ACC games.

Is Greenberg still crying about not getting in after going 1-6 against the RPI top 50, and nearly...nearly...beating a Final Four team?

I think this a little out of line. How many years has the ACC been one of the top bid conferences in the tourney ususally. They have one down year and a well deserved not so good out of conference schedule play and they get "irked". They had there chance to make a stronger conference with key out of conference wins and they failed. Take it like a man I say and quit whining because of a down year. IMO the ACC got what they deserved.
I doubt the big 12 will get 6 in this year again.
I ilike the Big ten to get atleat 6 in next year however.

the acc was very top heavy. once you got past the first 3-4 they were very average.

They did have the Top conference RPI all year long.
This has happened more than just a couple of years, a few years back before the expansion, they only had 3 teams in, but then they had 7 one year and they thought everything was back. But now, its back to four...here's the deal;
The ACC has had a lot of NBA early defections this decade and therefore you have lots of schools that need a couple of years to get back to that Top 40 status you need to be at to get an at-large bid. There has even been years when Duke and UNC have not made the tournament, thats like hell freezing over.
The ACC with 12 is 2 and 10 others, the 2 have coaches that can reload evey year and the other 10 are trying treading water, just trying to separate themselves from the pack, and because most put an emphasis on basketball, you dont have any Oregon States or Colorado's in the mix.
All that and they've been exposed in their non-conference games...

The ACC Tournament Champion lost to the 9th best team in the Big East in the opening round of the NCAA's and they've got the chutzpah to kvetch that they were UNDER-represented in the Big Dance?
Tell you what, ACC Coaches... how about you focus on getting your teams to improve their play so that they demonstrate, irrefutably, that they deserve to keep playing through March.

Excellent approach. The "SEC Football" Strategy. (Can't imagine it failing... no one resents the SEC's incessant condescension a bit!)
