SD released him....injury prone, batting under 200. Think ol Jimmy is done? If so, he had a GREAT career. I hope he retires a Cardinal. (One day contract)

I'm still in a state of semi-shock over this. For the Padres to simply dump Edmonds a little more than a month into the season, when the guy had practically no spring training, and when you were going to have to pay him $6 million regardless, is a real head-scratcher.
My guess is, Edmonds will resurface. I think he can still help somebody in a part-time role.

gomotigers-
Agreed. I was totally shocked by his release. It doesn't make any sense at all. Jimmy Ballgame's release tells me that the Padres really didn't want him in the first place and only made this trade for the pure heck of it. The Padres brass knew that Jimmy had next to nothing left in the tank and to release him so prematurely is to me inexcuseable. Now I could see them removing him as an everyday player - something that he shouldn't have been to begin with - and giving him a new roll with the club. But to relase him??? C'mon, how pathetic.
Now to answer the big $64,000 question. No, I seriously don't think Jimmy Ballgame's career is over. He needs to take some time off and spend it with his family and relax. Then after the All-Star break I seriously think he will get back into the game. Perhaps with the Dodgers, the D-Backs, the A's or yes even to finish his career where it began, with the Angels.
Go Cards!!!! 68

Let me start by saying I have a ton of respect for Jimmy ballgame. The truth of the matter is that his career was over a couple of years ago. The only reason he stayed so long with the cards was TLR and his fondness for vetrans. This is a move that has been coming for a while now. Jim, please go home to Orange County pop open a beer and sit on your patio over looking the pacific. It's time to relax and enjoy, just be careful if you see Scott Speizio driving around anywhere near your neighborhood. JMHO, great player but it was the right thing to do.

I agree with those who expect him to play after the All-Star break! I think he will be picked up by an AL team as a DH. Edmonds always played reckless in the outfield, resulting in nagging injuries, put him in a DH role, keep him healthy, and watch the pop return to his bat for another year or two! There are several teams who could use a little offensive help, such as here in Kansas City! Can't stand the Royals since the 85 series, but they do have a nice young team, lacking power, and veterans! Move Billy Butler to first, and let Jimmy swing away as DH. That would get me out to the K just to watch him!

I must say that you and I haven't been watching the same Jim Edmonds over the last couple of years... What team would want a player in the DH role that strikes out 5 times to every home run he hits. (Maybe higher like 8 to 1). He isn't an average hitter, leaves too many guys on base. If anything I think his defensive abilities could help a young team that needs guidance. I love you Jimmy, but hang em up and come back as a coach!!!!!

I always have to give my wife trouble about Edmonds because she'd always wanted to sit where she could see his butt. His butt aside, he is long out of his prime, I'd hate to see him go out this way but he wants to play full time. I don't see him in that role anymore. Go Cards!

I was going to ask you guys what you thought about him, but I think this about sums it up.
Chicago media is reporting that he'll be Cub by this weekend. It looks like his numbers have been falling since 05, and he does strike out way too much. We'll see.

Yeah, pretty low-class of the Padres to just dump the guy. I also believe that he will resurface wih another team. The point about the injuries over the past few years has a ton to do with his decresed production. In the right sitiation Edmonds could become an asset. I really hope to see him play again. Definitely one of my favorite players in MLB, Cardinal or otherwise.

What is everyone gonna think of him if he goes to the Cubs like it is rumored?
Me personally i wont like it and i would want his season to continue like it has the past year. | |
