With all the uproar (rightfully so) about Izzy and his current struggles, I can't help but feel that the Cardinals were lucky he was hurt at the end of 2006.  If he had been the closer in the playoffs, does he shut down the Mets in the 9th of game 7?  Does he strike out Beltran (THE Cardinal Killer) on 3 pitches?  I doubt it.

Thank God, Adam was our temp closer for that period.

To answer your question, I would say "no" Izzy would not have closed out that win over the Mets that sent us to the 2006 Series.

However, as I recall, the count on  Beltran was not 0-2 when Wainwright froze him with that brilliant cureball.  I believe the count on Beltran was 2-2, but it might have been 3-2. pipe

Wainright struck Beltran out on 3 pitches.

Pipe, I have the entire video of that game on my computer.  The at-bat was a 2 seam fastball for a called strike, a foul on a curveball low and in, and a called strike three on a curve.

Granted, a 3-2 count would have been the classic pressure situation.

Honestly I don't think Izzy would have closed out the game.  He would have crumbled.  I don't know what's wrong with him but he's not the same Izzy.  The Izzy that would close out the tightest games under pressure.  He just isn't the same.  He is falling apart, and I am glad that we took him out of the closer role temporarily.  In that game he would have just thrown Beltran a mistake pitch and Beltran would have belted it.  It is a great thing Wainwright was on the mound.

If Izzy had been our closer, we lose game #2 of the NLDS to the Padres.

Wainright pitched the 9th in game 4 of that series even though we had a 4 run lead.  I say Izzy blows that as well.

So we don't even make it to the Mets...

Wainwright against the Mets is why I love baseball.
