We have 11 games where we have given up 2 Runs or less and then over half our games we have given up 3 runs or less. If anything our fielding is struggling, not the pitching. there are only two teams that have given up more unearned runs than the Mets. The Rangers and the Diamondbacks. We have already given up 21 unearned runs. You can't fault pitching for that. We are sitting at a 3.79 ERA. No I would have to say Fielding and Batting is what we are struggling with. Most of you already know this I just wanted to put it in perspective. Take away some obscure performances, such as Snachez's implosion for 5 Runs, Sosa's two really bad innings and one or two by Heilman and we have respectable if not the best numbers. But, hey these things happen and you can't avoid them.
I have been satisfied with Nelson Figueroa (Figs) and even though Mike Pelfrey is over 5 ERA I didn't expect what many of you seemed to be expecting from him. So I can say that I am satisfied here as well. I do however question my expectations for Pedro and El Duque though.

I keep waiting for the Mets to start playing well and go on a run but it is just not happening. What is going on. Just when someone starts hitting well another goes into a slump. Resyes comes around and now Wright can't hit. I am still waiting for them to come together.

Tonight for Pelfrey I thought would be a game if he could pitch well you never know...but if he struggles against a Reds team that is 14-22 and cannot get a W then what do we do? If he cant pitch well against these guys, then what more can we expect from him....This is a team the Mets should be beating on, like in game 1 of the DH today....Games they should be winning...

on baseball tonight a couple days ago they said how the Mets are always doing very good against other teams aces... but they lose a lot of games to 3 4 and 5 starters...

Well I dont know what Arroyo is for the Reds but I know his ERA was over 8, he was 1-4 and the Mets had a great chance to take two.....It is not looking so promising now...down 3....in the 9th.....Bats come out smoking in game 1, then take a long nap in game 2.....Just when you think they have turned the corner after Game 1s performance, well guess again....another poor performance...

.....not too mention some of the idiotic moves Willie Randolph makes. Fellas, I'm really getting sick and tired of this guy. I'm also getting sick and tired when the TV networks put the camera on him and all you see is that stare. Yes, the players are the ones who play the games, but when you're not being motiviated by your skipper, you just simply go through the motions. Say what you want about Bobby Cox or Lou Pinella, but they are motivaters. We need a guy like that leading our team while we still have a chance. I say let Willie go and bring in someone now!

I was relatively happy with the way that Pelfrey pitched yesterday. The only thing, and this has been my BIGGEST complaint about him all year, is that he doesn't do anything the easy way. He walks batters, give batters hits in long at bats and so EVERY time he reaches the end of 5, hes at or near 100 pitches. Its killer! Other than that though, when he came out of the game, I think it was 2-1, and he had really given his team a chance to win.
Arroyo was supposed to be the ace of this staff, but has struggled all year up until his last two starts Maybe the Mets have a way of bringing struggling pitchers around like Arroyo and Gruzulani (sp) for the Pirates.
I did find it interesting (and I realized this also) that every time we played an ace, we had our best offensive days, raising, Smolt's ERA, Webbs ERA, Penny's ERA, etc, but can't do squat against the bad pitchers. In my opinion, that just comes down to mentality, and not mentally preparing yourself to play baseball (ie: go to work!!!)

The pitching has been inconsistent. Perez is an enigma, and has done anything BUT taken a step forward after last year. Maybe Boras is whispering in his ear that the Mets are dissing him by not having signed him to a $250 million contract already. Someone will give this guy too much money in the offseason and keep their fingers crossed.
Santana has given up a ton of HRs, but still has a 3.1 ERA. If the bullpen does blow2 (or was it 3?) of his wins, no one is talking about the solo shots he gives up.
Let's talk about the bullpen. With the exception of the other night, Wagner has been lights out. And why did he give up runs? Crappy defense behind him. David Wright has always to me saved more runs then his errors have allowed. Not so much so far this season. And a 3B that hits .320/30 HR and drives in 110 can make 30 errors. A 3B that hits .265 with 20 HRs probably can't. I believe that David's offensive numbers will come up, but maybe it's time to give him a day off or two to get his head straight. Something ain't right there. BTW. His lefty/right splits? .441 against LHP, .211 against RHP. Has to stay in and go to right-center against righties.
Back to the bullpen. Scott Schoeneweis has a 1.74 ERA. Lefties hitting .111 and righties .294. About what you'd expect.
Pedro Feliciano gave up 2 runs in his last outing. They were the second and third he's given up all year. He's fine.
Joe Smith - they're hitting .218 against him. He's fine. Lefties are hurting him, though (.455 BAA versus .159 for righties). He's a "right handed specialist", if there is such a thing.
Which brings us to Aaron Heilman. Surprisingly enough, he's been great against righties and horrible against lefties, just like Smith. .355 BAA for lefties, and .176 against righties. All the HRs against are from lefties, who slug .839 against him (every lefty is Barry Bonds against him) versus righties slugging .196. His numbers against righties are stellar.
