I heard about this story on Boomer & Carton this morning and had to read it. This is why I can't take this team or the Mets right now. My favorite part is this little gem:

"Met players and officials were struck by how supportive and mild-mannered the fans were in Arizona, even when the hometown Diamondbacks struggled. It was a far cry from Shea in April, when even 2-1 counts on opposing hitters drew boos."

#1 The Diamondback are 21-11. WHEN THE HELL HAVE THEY STRUGGLED?!?!?!

#2 The reason no one cares when they do is b/c they have a $66 million payroll!!! If Mets officials and players want the fans to care a lot less, and by extension come the park less and turn on SNY less, move the team to some small market somewhere, and then when all they can afford is a $66 million payroll I'm sure Carlos Delgado and Carlos Beltran and and Luis Castillo and Willie Randolph and all these other guys will have no problem taking a 66% pay cut to not be booed, and I'm sure the Wilpons won't mind the 50% reduction in their profits in exchange for the reduced expectations.

This is why this team infuriates me. Its rare that I agree with anything Craig Carton says, but he was right this morning. This team is acting like a bunch of whiney little 13-year old girls, from the players to the manage to the organization at large. If they just took it like men and said, "They're booing us b/c we deserve it b/c we have the 3rd highest payroll in baseball and suffered one of the worst late season collapses in MLB history last year" it would be better than fighting it.

I was going to make a post about this story, but you beat me to it.

I find it ridiculous that a man who not only has spent the majority of his career in NYC, but also played under the magnifying glass known as the 1970s-80s Yankees, seems to have trouble with the pressure.

This is a man who once sympathized with fans, saying he knows what it’s like to try and support a losing team. This is a man who came here riding the coattails of another manager who endured endless fan and media scrutiny.

This is a man who said he was up to the challenge. Which is why his statements about hostile Shea fans are, again, absolutely ridiculous.

The New York Post had the following to say:

"Willie Randolph doesn’t think it was an accident that the Mets looked so relaxed while taking two of three from the Diamondbacks in Arizona over the weekend. Randolph admitted yesterday that the constant negativity from the fans at Shea Stadium so far this year - an obvious carryover from last September’s epic collapse - has turned the road into a welcome refuge"

Okay, let’s analyze. First off, constant negativity? Last time I checked, this was one of the top paid teams in the league. Yet, the team has shown little fire, and currently holds a record that has largely been bested by organizations like Oakland and Florida. Though I don't agree with Booing, I think we’ve earned the right to boo a little. And even if it does get a little much at times, well, suck it up, son.

But of course, tender-skinned Willie doesn’t agree:

“In our mind, we moved on,” Randolph said of last season’s historic meltdown. “Obviously, the fans are having a tough time moving past that.”

By a show of hands, how many Mets fans are still thinking about 2007? IS the Booing from a 2007 carryover or from a lack of production that’s going down in 2008?

Maybe a little of both, but as another Met fan pointed out to me... We’re booing a lack of run support for Johan, who has pitched his a$$ off. We’re booing a bullpen that can’t seem to keep runners from doing jogs around the bases. We’re booing a lineup that has more holes than the Playboy Mansion, with stars that aren’t doing a drop of what they’re paid to.

We’re booing the apathetic crybaby attitude that seems to have pervaded this team.

The Post continues:

"Randolph is convinced the atmosphere back in New York will improve, perhaps as soon as this weekend against the Reds, if the Mets can win their current series here in L.A."

“When we start to play well, you’ll see a change in that,” Randolph said of the fan reaction at Shea. “We don’t talk about it or concern ourselves with it. We just hope that they eventually get behind this team, because I think we’re going to make them real proud before the year is over.”

Why are you always talking about some indeterminate time in the future? In Spring Training, we heard about erasing the memories of 2007. When the team got off to a slow start, you looked forward to the warmer weather. What’s wrong with winning now? I can name a bunch of other teams that don’t seem to have any problems with the chill in the air, and they certainly don’t seem to be struggling with their fans.

The bottom line is this: Willie, you know your job’s on the line. And while I’ve been one of your more avid supporters, I can’t stomach this sad clown routine you’re throwing at the media. Instead of tossing blame around, maybe you should try and inspire your team to play as a unit, maybe run a little harder, and stop worrying so much about fans throwing a few boos your way. We’ll let you know if and when you’ve earned the cheers.

Just ask Delgado.

But, if you insist on turning your poor management job into a “fan problem” then my advice is for you to pack your belongings, and try and find a job with the gestapo across town. We’ve had enough, and we’re letting you know it. There are plenty of other people who could manage this team to a few wins, without obsessing about the behavior of the fans. Be a professional, and more importantly, be a leader.

Otherwise, just leave. Seriously, Willie. If you don’t like it, go.

1st, well said Tartans...

We the fans care about this team and want them to win..We saw what happened last year and we are now in May and cannot consider it early any longer, 30 games into the season you should know by now where you are as a team....well too me you cant use that an excuse any longer...

Football is 16 games long, you have to figure it out a lot sooner, take the Giants for example, heck they started 0-2 and could have gave up, but they somehow turned things around and look what they have done...

We can only hope the Mets figure things out soon enough, yeah we have 132 games left. You cant play like the Mets have and say what the heck come July-Sept we can turn it on and play better...by that time it maybe too late.....

This may have been pointed out already (didn't read Tartans post word for word) but the Mets are actually a better home team than road team. (9-5 vs 7-9 respectively) I dunno what his thought process is, but there's something at Shea that's working for the Mets.

The first two posts were frickin awesome.  Great job in getting my realizations to the core.  The Mets do have a large payroll.  The Mets are in a big market.  The Mets are stagnating in the standings.  They do deserve to have criticism lumped onto them.  We are paying for greatness and we're given mediocirity.

I've been a loyal Met fan for a long time and I can not recall once when a manager blamed the fans for losing.  Why in the hell should we embrace the errors and strikeouts of Delgado?  I think these fans are trying to like every single Met, but the team isn't giving the fan anything to cheer.

you guys are what two games above .500 and only 2 games out with 130 to play, and played by your guys own admissions poorly. It is a little premature to boo and reflects poorly upon you fan base.  i wouldn't want to play in front of booing fans either, especially in april. who the hell are they to boo. if you want to boo your team why go to the game in the first place. voice your disatisfaction by not going, not by paying 100 for a ticket and 8 dollars a beer inning after inning until you get the beer muscles to boo. i love watching the Mets games simply for the crybaby fans. my favorite was when you guys were beating eachother down 5-3 against the Braves.
