The Cleveland Plain Dealer is reporting that the Tribe has designated Michaels for assignment and called up Ben Fransisco. They have 10 days to trade (good luck) or release Michaels now. Hopefully Francisco will get plenty of playing time and hopefully he can provide a spark this team desperately needs. Michaels just never got on base consistently as was advertised when they first acquired him. I know many of us Tribe fans have been asking for Francisco to get the call up. Well, we got our wish and lets hope he delivers.

The end of the Michaels - Dellucci platoon.
Of course, I'd like to see Ben Francisco get off to a good start and provide the kind of spark that Asdrubal Cabrera did last year.
This is an overall good move, but they still need to get more offense. In the off season, I never thought that the Tribe would need to look for a second baseman, but here it is early May, and that is an issue.

Delucci has been hitting better lately. I think Francisco will start out playing primarily against left handed pitching. Not b/c he can't hit righties, b/c of Delucci. Francisco will aslo be used to give Gut days off.
I hope he (and Gut) develops into an everyday LF/RF who can replace Delucci b/c I think he has more upside.
It will be interesting to see what they do when Shin Soo Choo is healthy in a couple of weeks especially if Delucci is still hitting. Choo is out of options.

I really think that 2nd base is fine with Asdrubal Cabrera. Look at our line-up compared to other teams that are producing, or even past Indians teams. We need outfield bats. The outfiled is a position, similar to first base, where you can maybe sacrifice a bit of defense for some power. (ie former players such as albert belle, Manny Ramirez, ellis burke, etc.) We're talking about middle infield here. positions that up until the break through of players like a-rod, jeter, and tejada were never thought of as positions that would hit higher than 7th in a line-up.
We already have a bat in the middle infield with jhonny p, lets keep the jury out on druby cabrera. Let him to continue to spark the team by flashing leather and occasionally providing clutch hitting. Taking a chance on francisco is great, but if this doesnt work we might need to think about pulling the trigger on a trade before we get to far out of contention. I realize its stil early and the division is wide open, but we have put ourselves in a HUGE hole in the wild card.

Cabrera needs to go back to the minors. Yeah he's a good a defensive player but I think Barfield should get another shot for the 2nd base job. I bet Barfield would be a lot better then Cabrera. Remmeber Barfield is a good defensive player too with a better bat. At this point the Tribe should try different things to get out of their horrible hitting slump.

Agreed.
Most of the team is in a slump, and that definitely points to the batting coach. If they won't fire him, then change around the coaching and put Skinner in as the hitting instructor. If not Skinner, there must be someone else in the Indians organization, AAA, AA - a change alone would likely do some good.
If there weren't so many players in a slump, I'd say stick with Asdrubal Cabrera. But we can't let everyone work their way out, there are just too many. Changes need to be made, and putting Josh Barfield in is a good option.

Yeah, his name is Wes Hodges (AA). He is batting .280 with 7 HR and 27 RBI's. He had a fantastic spring and then has continued to produce. This kid is the real deal and he plays third base. Hell, can't be any worse than what we have playing there now!

Unless Francisco is on fire when Choo is healthy (early-mid June I've heard) then Ben will be demoted in place of Choo. I just don't see the Tribe dropping Marte (though you never know) and Looch has actually been producing lately (though that too could change).
As far as Wes Hodges.....he needs to show that he can do more than have 1 good month in AA. He's far from ready for a callup right now. You 'may' see him in September but I wouldn't expect to see him before that. You don't see many hitters jump straight from AA to the MLs. It's definately worth watching his progress this year though......he may get a chance to show he's the future at 3B as early as next spring....

Thank GOD! Don't get me wrong, Jason Michaels has come up big for the tribe in the past... Huge defensive plays, Big Hits, etc...
But every time he is at the plate I feel that he is trying to hit the ball out of the park. Time for a little, REALITY CHECK. You are not a power hitter. We had to pay the Pittsburgh to take him (we do get a player to be named later). That hurts. I do not want to pay anything to Pittsburgh.
However, this is it for Ben Francisco... either perform or get traded. Ben Francisco did win a batting title in the minors. I do have a fear though. Young hitters sometimes have a break out rookie year and then slump forever after. This is due to the fact that other teams have scouted their hitting techniques and have prepared to "shut them down". I have this fear for Ben Francisco. However, I do like what I have seen so far with Francisco.
This is not the answer for Indians hitting slump. Last night we did see ,hopefully, a "glimpse" of the next few months. Travis Hafner had a huge game. We still need key players like Travis Hafner and Jhonny Peralta to play consistent. Asdrubal Cabrera shows some potential. He is having "good" at-bats (racking up the pitch count, sacrifice bunting, etc). AC needs to adjust his technique and gain some confidence. He has the ability to be a Cleveland Great. Once the bats show up, Cleveland will be the team to beat.
