Candlestick Park had an alternative configuration to allow for the 49ers to play on Sundays.

The Alamo Dome had an alternative configuration to allow the Spurs to play there.

Safeco Field is perhaps the nicest stadium in the country.

It seems funny that nobody has made an effort to see if it would be plausible to have basketball there.

In fact, didn't the NCAA use a big stadium during the tournament this year?

you cant have an outdoor stadium as a full time basketball arena, rain and wind swirling in the open end during games in the winter? thats just a dumb idea for a full solution maybe 1 game but for a full season thats just a dumb idea

Safeco Field is NOT an outdoor field, per se. It has a retractable roof and yes it could be modified to make it suitable for basketball games.

they could try that but i can see bennett and stern saying that that isnt a good enough place to play and if your talking about playing outdoors i think seattle is the last place to play outside it rains none stop up there mabye somewhere like Miami would be good somewhere down south where there's good weather

how is Safeco not an outdoor stadium, even with the roof closed 1/4 of the stadium is still exposed to rain, snow and wind...did you see opening day when there was snowing falling in center field from the wind, a 30 degree basketball game wouldnt be very attractive, Safeco would just be a horrible idea cause they dont have a place for the scoreboard over the court dont have a screen for replays and seating would be horrible, like your idea of trying to find suitable places to play but Safeco would be a worse business move than moving the team to OKC

I think it's more far-fetched to think you can turn a basketball arena into a hockey arena and people do that all the time

exactly how is it far fetched to turn a basketball arena into a hockey arena, when over 75% of the hockey arenas are basketball friendly? its designed almost as the same venue, as opposed to having a 45,000 seat, that the wind can alter shots, a place with no big screens, no place to put the scoreboard, dont know to many NBA officials like the idea of a chance of the hardwood having rain drops on them or the players having to wear under armour during games cause the cold..might as well have it at Qwest if they entertain that idea consider Qwest is much more suited for a basketball game, than Safeco Field

I think the idea of Safeco being a basketball facility shows that we're a bit desperate. That place is flat cold during the winter and water does get in. Besides that, the floor would have to be somewhere behind 2nd base and it would have to run nw-sw. The field would need bleachers and it would still feel hollow in that place. You would be 5-7 minutes from all the concessions on the main course too. It would be tough to pull off. Retro fitting it for the NCAA Final Four would be a whole other thing though. If you could seal it from wind and rain, I could imagine that place packed to the gills with seats on the floor? It would be pretty cool.

Does anybody remember Wrestle Mania in there? It was horrible and I sat in the club seats. Don't ask me why I was there, it was one of those no miss situations...... I did it for the memory of Ricky the Dragon Steamboat!
