Watching the Royals squander a 3rd consectutive solid start from Zack Greinke pushed me over the limit today.    He should be 6-0 and instead he sits at 3-1.

The offense is utterly pathetic.   The only power threat in the lineup is Jose Guillen who is off to a very slow start (though coming on of late) and to a lesser degree Alex Gordon (who is an easy out for a crafty pitcher).   The rest of the lineup is packed full of punch and judy hitters.

David DeJesus is doing a nice job getting on but has the base running skills of a 1st grader and I don't hink I am exaggerating.   I hold Grud exempt, he is doing everything that can be asked of him.   Billy Butler looks like nothing more that a ground ball hitter who will find a hole about 30% of the time.  I'm a big fan of Butler and I believe he will start driving the ball but at the moment he is completely punchless.    Guillen is the only serious extra base threat and he is hovering around the Mendoza line.   Gordon has stayed around .300 but any god pitcher can get him out without throwing a pitch in the strikezone.  John Buck is doing about what can truthfully be expected from him, he wil never have huge numbers but they are acceptable when you consider the success of our young pitchers.  And then there is Pena.  I won't get into that as anyone who has read other posts of mine know where I stand on that one.

Hillman preached before the season started ... FUNDAMENTALS, AGGRESSIVE BASERUNNING and the dreaded  MANUFACTURE RUNS which translated means "we have no power at all and need the luck of the Irish to score"      ; So far we have had runners thrown at on the base paths, picked off of first and occasionally not running out pop ups.

The moral of the story?   If you can't drive the ball out of the park you better be darn good at protecting and moving base runners and coming up with timely hits.  Thus far we are 0-3.

Anyway, sorry for the lengthy vent I am just very frusterated and I pull hard for Zack and our young pitching staff.

I agree, today was very frustrating. KC had put up a zillion runs in the past couple games vs. Texas, and then come up with a dollar bill today. To me, THAT is the most frustrating part. I wouldn't say the offense is "utterly pathetic" as you've said, but it's definitely frustrating. The timely hitting isn't there when it needs to be. Sure, they closed the gap in game 2 of the Texas series, but not until they were down by 5 or 6.

I'm trying to be a bit more optimistic about things. The good news is that Grienke is showing some serious consistency. That's something that KC was merely hoping for this year and really hadn't seen in the past 2 or 3 seasons. So that's a big positive. Guillen, on the whole, had a respectable series. To be sure, it was better than he's done previously this year. Grudz, as you said, is a horse. He's a model ballplayer and always has been. St. Louis was dumb to get rid of him (I'm from the middle of MO, so I claim both teams... if you can believe that).

Billy Butler isn't putting up Ryan Howard-esque numbers like everyone was secretly hoping, but I don't think he's too far off. It's early, and he's shown that he has a lot of potential.

I think you nailed it when you started in on your "fundamentals and baserunning" soapbox. For every decent baserunning move we've seen this year, we've seen a mental mistake on the basepaths. I think Hillman is doing his best to try to manufacture runs, but there are also a remarkable number of mistakes on the basepaths. Most of them, by my estimate, aren't Hillman's fault (bad reads leading to bad jumps mainly). Some of them are a product of Hillman trying to make too much happen on the bases. But when your offense is in sleep mode, as we saw tonight, can you blame him?

Hillman is in a tough spot. With a lineup that averages barely over 3.5 runs a game, you almost have to play small-ball in today's game. Then again, a pitching staff with a 4.71 ERA will keep you from tallying many wins playing small-ball.

The key is more consistency from the starters. Bannister has been roughed up a bit recently. KC needs to get him back on track, and desperately needs to get some wins from the back of the rotation. We've seen maybe 2 decent outings from pitchers other than Grienke or Bannister. The back end of the rotation desperately needs to step it up.

That's it for my rant, thanks for reading. :-)

indeed, well said...its hard being Royals fan knowing if we could get some key hits we should have a better record  but for some reason its not workin i like the line up switch

hilman did dunno if hes gonna stick with it but i like the idea behind it and we need to drive the ball in the alleys get some runners over maybe try and bunt them over who knows very frustrating being a royals fan right now and the sad thing is there still in the hunt if they play a lil better altho detroit is playin well now look out for them.
