Because I don't think Budinger is coming back...
Jennings (1), Wise (2), Horne (3), Hill (4), Withey (5)
I'm hoping that Lavender adjusts to the college game quickly and can start or provide a lot of minutes at the 2 - he's much more of an SG than Wise or Jennings - but I don't see him starting to begin the year. Zane will play a lot next year as well, provided he can improve his defense, but I don't see him starting.

That's probably what Olson will go with, but as I've already noted, I think it would be a mistake, just because of the defense coming from the backcourt.

I agree, but the one thing that will help is having a couple of shot blockers down low. It'll allow the guards to extend out without having to worry as much about getting beat of the dribble. Still, I'm with you that Wise, while he has quick hands and great anticipation, doesn't have the size to play the 2, nor am I confident that he has the ability to create his own shot. But, if Budinger doesn't return, I think this is the lineup. If Wise doesn't come back, and much may have to do with how the staff shakes out, we'll be in real trouble (if both he and Budinger leave).

I would worry about the length on the perimeter when Arizona's on defense. I don't think either Wise or Jennings are good on-ball defenders at this point, and allowing a lot of easy penetration worries me because it will move the big men away from their defensive assignments and put them in more opportunities to get into foul trouble. Ideally I would like to see the big men down low getting blocks when they come over to double rather than when they pick up a player that went by his assignment.
I'm not so attached to Wise in regards to Arizona's future success. I think he's a quality reserve type player, and those can usually be replaced. I think Lavender could handle the point for 5-10 minutes per game if he needed to. It would be nice to have two true point guards on the team, but I don't think it's completely necessary because Jennings can handle the point duties most of the time. If Wise leaves I think Arizona can survive, but it certainly would test their depth like never before.

I'm not trying to be a jerk or anything, but Nic Wise is a temendous on ball defender... He always has been a good defender... the word on him since freshman year has been about his defense... AZ started recruting him in 8th grade... There were questions about them recruiting him because he's such a man to man defender, but Lute plays zone...

I don't take your views personally, but I do think you're wrong. Wise has never dominated as an on-ball defender. All of his steals come from stripping the ball from big men, and that's about the extent of his defensive presence. He's too short in height and length to be very effective, even if he were to fine-tune his defensive fundamentals. I think Arizona's constant difficulty in stopping penetration and allowing a high three point percentage are good indicators of this. You can keep telling me he's a great defender, but the fact remains that I've provided explanations supporting my argument, whereas all I'm getting from you is your opinion. If you explain to me why I'm wrong, maybe I'll be inclined to change my mind.
As for Olson playing zone, he does it on occasion when his personnel dictates it, but he has primarily been a man-to-man coach his entire career. That's not an opinion, it's a fact.

the facts you have stated about about Wise being a poor defender is you saying he's short, not long and strips the balls from big men... I saw him pick the pockets of many PG's last season and read balls to pick them off from the passing lanes(sorry my proof can't be specific minutes of games)... I guess we'll just have to see next season... I can't tell you how much better they were with Wise's defensive pressence last season.. he gave them a huge spark...I can't believe this is an arguement... I don't get to see the local FSN AZ games, but I watched 95% of the nationally televised games, and I just don't understand how you can say negative things about his defense...plus, think about how good of a defender he is for his size...

U of A will end all of its troubles this year. With or without Budinger the wildcats will be good next year. Did anyone happen to see Jennings in the McDonalds Allstar game, he is an elite point guard, much better than Bayless. Horne will improve a lot, and I still see Onobun being a top contributor. Hill will be dominate and i don't see anyone in the Pac 10 that can stop him next year. So to answer your question 1) Jennings, 2) Wise, 3) Horne, 4) Onobun, 5) Hill

I've watched every single minute of Wise's career at UA, besides the UCLA disaster at Pauley last year. I feel pretty good about my analysis of him. He doesn't stay in front of his man consistently well, and filling passing lanes and picking pockets of many point guards last season just didn't happen on any sort of consistent basis. You've called him a great defender. You're telling me that you don't even understand how this can be an argument yet you have only seen him play a handful of times. He was a spark, but th | |
