I am back from a disappointing road trip to Phoenix. On 4/28 the Astros had the perfect opportunity to take out Haren, Haren was losing his control as soon as the Astros got a baserunner. 4/29 Valverde showed electric stuff striking out Burke and Byrnes. Today's game the Astros shell the "Big Unit" Randy Johnson, from the bloop by Lance Berkman scoring a run, and the blast 3-R HR by Carlos Lee 4-0 'Stros after the 1st inning. Chacon looked too comfortable on the mound and left balls in the zone. In the Bottom of the 6th the Astros bring in Wesley Wright, He gives up a double and retires the next two batters, 2 outs runner on 2nd, 7-5 Astros. Micah Owings pinch hits batting .389 this season, Cecil Cooper brings in Dave Borkowski right hander, on right hander. Borkowski serves up a Swedish meatball put on the menu by Cooper, 2-run HR for Owings, 7-7 Tie Wright charged with an earned run. The bleeding doesn't stop, Borkowski surrenders another run. 8-7 Diamondbacks. Matsui gets aboard on a single, Berkman on a walk, Jose Cruz Jr. flies out to center. I'm starting FireCooper.com very soon!

That was indeed crappy managing. Borkowski should never see the light of day when the game is even remotely close.

I am new here and was wondering, when you say you just back, do you follow the Astros? If so....can I be you? I love the Stros and use to be an Astro Buddy when I was kid and lived in Houston back in the late 70's, early 80's. I live in Tennessee now and watch on MLB.com, but havent seen a live game in two years.
Go Stros!!!

I dunno, call me crazy.... but from watching the Astros the past few seasons, Borkowski is not meant to be just a blow-out pitcher, as you guys seem to want him to be. I remember one of our epic 18-inning affairs in which he held the other team scoreless for THREE INNINGS. And he got stuck with the loss on a lucky bloop off the 1st base bag or something, IIRC. That might not have been the same game, actually, the more I think of it that was a crappy break for Lidge, not him, but... they both got some of the same crap luck in the past couple of years.
Borkowski doesn't have amazing stuff, but he's a workhorse, and he had a bad outing. Oh well.
We just did to the Brewers today (they had a 4-0 lead) what the D-backs did to us (with our 6-2 lead) on Wednesday.
It's baseball. It evens out. Unless your team blows. Fortunately, ours doesn't. We're middle-of-the-pack.

Borkowski is most definitely a garbage-time pitcher. His ERA is kept relatively low by the fact that he generally pitches long relief when opposing batters aren't patient, but he's usually good for a base-clearing homer to completely take you out of a game. He has pitched in two wins this entire season, and he gave up a run in each of those appearances. He saves our decent pitchers arms by going 2+ during blow-outs, but any time he gets into a relatively close game, it's safe to assume you're going to lose by a pretty big margin.

Well, he certainly added more proof to suggest my faith in him is not well deserved on Sunday, with that three-run homer. The only thing I can say in his defense is that he inherited 2 of those 3 runners... but then Sampson didn't deserve another pitcher letting them both score off a homer, either, so... bleh.
We all knew we'd have some pitching bumps along the way. I think we should be thankful they've been as few and far between as they have, really, considering a lot of us were bracing for the worst. And certainly we have not seen the worst case scenario to this point.
But I'll stop tooting the Borkowski horn... for now, at least. It's just that I had no idea you guys saw him as basically another Brian Moehler, so it was a rude awakening for me to see him discussed as such, 'tis all.

myself: " We just did to the Brewers today (they had a 4-0 lead) what the D-backs did to us (with our 6-2 lead) on Wednesday."
Oh, and I should add that we did that to the Brewers AGAIN, what with the 6-2 lead they had over us on Sunday... that we narrowed to 6-4, tied at 6-6, and won in extra-innings by 8-6. So that's now TWO steals of a Brewers win we performed... to make up for that gut-wrenching theft by the D-Backs and their hard-hitting pitcher... against us. 2 fer 1... not such a bad deal, eh?
Speaking of extra innings... Can you believe we were the last team in the National League to go 9+, BTW? The Astros... the 00's Astros! The TEAM of extra-innings drama.... waits until May 08 to have their first 2008 extra-innings game! It just blows my mind. Heh.

Borkowski needs to be released now. This guy will not in any way help this team. I wouldn't even bring him in a 6 run lead. Give him his walking papers now.

borkowski is just as advertised... you get what u pay for..i will say this..he does more with less talent than anyone else on the Astros staff... i personally love the guy.. he competes..never takes a pitch off..and is out there to win.. he was solid last yr..but somehow got in Garner's doghouse..he is just having a rough patch.. no way they should release him.. we dont have anyone else..face it.. the well is dry (or near to it) for talent in the organization..

I will admit, he's better than Moehler. And it's not his fault that he gave up that three-run blast the other day, because he shouldn't have been put in that situation. His job should never be to come in when runners are on base. It seems like Coop still has last year's 'stros attitude, which is that if we're down by one run in the 4th, we're not making a come-back.
With this offense though, that kills us. We can survive four runs over four innings from our starter and still make a game out of it. We can not survive another three runs surrendered by our bullpen the very next inning. It just kills our chances for a come-back.
In fact, inning # should have nothing to do with managing your bullpen as far as I'm concerned. If it's the 6th inning, tie ball-game, and the bases are juiced, bring in the best pitcher available. If that's Valverde, then so be it. You don't always have to save him for the ninth, because it's going to be irrelevant if somebody comes in and gives up a base-clearing double anyways.
If it's the 7th or 8th inning, nobody is on base, we're down one, and the other team's 7, 8, 9 hitters are up? Go ahead and bring in Borkowski. He can handle that.
But please please please, Coop (yea, I know he doesn't read these boards), never ever bring him in when the game is close and there are runners on base. Brocail, Wright, Geary, Valverde, and maybe even Villarreal are all better options. Well, maybe not Villarreal... Although I'm still thinking he'll get it together soon. He's pitched well lately.
I know a lot of people live and die by saving the closer until the ninth, but that's always been my biggest problem with the Astros. It just doesn't make sense to me.

To backtrace to the Arizona series, Coop is an idiot. Say what you want about borkowski, i agree he is not great, but a manager has to realize when a pitcher dosent have their best stuff. Borkowski gave up a HR to the first batter and the next better hit a double that would have been a HR in many ballparks. WHY DO YOU LEAVE HIM IN? He stays in to give up a hit to the next better and then the Diamondbacks win by 1. Later in that game, Geoff Geary gave up a double to the one batter he faced and got yanked. Why are we doing this when we are not in a position to win, but when we have the lead or are tied, we don't? And one final note too, I understand that you want a righty on righty and lefty on lefty matchup, but the Astros do too much of it. I would MUCH rather have a lefty who is throwning well face someone like Owings, then have a shitty right hander come in and give up a "meatball."
Go Astros anyways! Who knows, they look promising to me right now.
