This is an open discussion and I want Red Sox nation to toss their opinions in about this. I’m going to say that Dustin Pedroia as of now is and will be the best second basemen the Red Sox have ever had in history. To back my point we will look at Red Sox second basemen in the past and look at there first Batting Avg. they had with the Red Sox.
When I mean first Batting Avg. I mean more then 100 games played not the first year they were called up.
Time to turn back the clock:
Bobby Doerr from 1937 to 1951 first year Avg. .289
Billy Goodman 1947-1957 first year Avg. .310 didn't start second base till 1951 after Booby Doerr left.
Mike Andrews 1966-1970 first year Avg. .263
Doug Griffin 1971-1977 first year Avg. .244
Marty Barret 1982 -1990 first year Avg. .303
Jody Reed 1987-1992 first year Avg. .293
Lou Merloni 1993-2003 first year Avg .254
Dustin Pedroia 2007 to present first year Avg. .317 and AL Rookie of the year
Dustin Pedroia is still young and has many years in baseball and I don’t see Dustin being traded to anyone. If he puts in the years as the above baseball players have and he keeps the numbers he will end up being the best second basemen in Red Sox history.
Please feel free to shoot me down on this or add on if you like.

right now there is no question that bobby doerr is better than Dustin Pedroia (when ranking Red Sox 2B). it's possible that pedroia will pass him when it's all said and done, but he has a long way to go before that happens. 2000 hits, 220 HR, 1200 RBI, almost 1100 runs, .288 AVG, more BB than K. doerr was a bad base stealer, but that's the only strike against him.
it's not crazy to think pedroia could become the best 2B in the sox's history, but it is crazy to think he currently holds that distinction. for the record, i don't see pedroia passing doerr - injuries happens, a trade is possible, pedroia doesn't have much of a track record (to consider durability, continued success, etc.), and last year may have been pedroia's ceiling. it's just too early for the comparison.

Wow jumping the gun a little on this one. I love the way this kid plays I think he could become one of the best second basemen the Red Sox have ever seen but let him play a few years before you hand him that title. There are only 5 Red Sox numbers retired and Doerr's is one of them, so I can not just hand that title to a scrappy young player yet let him earn it....he is well on his way.

So Doerr is the best for now and I agree. Maybe one day Dustin will see his number there... maybe.

This might be a good topic, maybe needs a thread of its own.
Who do you think will be the next Sox to have his number retired?

Pedroia's always drawn comparisons to David Eckstein for obvious reasons, but it is already evident that Pedroia is a far superior hitter who is capable of playing gold glove caliber defense (he would have likely won last year in addition to his ROY if not for Placido Polanco's errorless streak). And while he's already quintupled the similarly built RemDawg's career Red Sox HR total (a staggering 2 in 2809 ABs) he hasn't been elected president of anything yet, so lets not get ahead of ourselves.
The list of previous second basemen compiled here is definitely valid and the point of Pedroia's potential is made sharper by the stats provided, however, I have to admit that I am amazed at the list's egregious and inexcusable omission of Craig Grbeck. Do you think it was easy for him to knock out those 2 hits in 41 at bats in 2001??? Sure, other guys like Cesar Crespo have been every bit the offensive powerhouse, but the degree of offensive futility acheived by Grbeck will not likely be equaled by another player in a Red Sox uniform anytime soon unless Terry Francona makes a conscious effort to get himself run out of town.
Also, the name of Pokey Reese deserves mention here, if for nothing else than providing Fenway crowds with so many classic instances to enhusiastically chant his name. Of course, the thrill produced was nothing remotely approaching that of the "YOOOUUUK!!!" phenomenon, which even compels away crowds to participate. It did, however, along with his defense, almost compensate for or his customary 0 for 4 batting lines (in the event that the Sox won that night).
Lastly on the subject of Sox 2nd Basemen, I want to dedicate a brief tribute to Mark Bellhorn, whose elegant follow through on third strikes was a thing of beauty to behold. And as much as fans remember him for that iconic strikeout pose, let's not forget his J.D. Drew-esque feats of atonement which saw him hit the go-ahead three run homer against the Yankees in the game six of the ALCS and another in game seven. For that rare combination of impecable form and post-season clutch hitting, he absolutely deserves a spot right up there in the Red Sox all-time 2B pantheon.
