Its the easy answer. The non-BCS schools all get together and start their own playoff. They collect all the revenue, have the games on campus except for the title game and steal back the inflated revenue that the BCS cartel has refused to give into.
If the non-included schools petition the NCAA to start a playoff, how could the NCAA say no, its not like their getting anything out of the current system.
That would be great but it can't happen. The 66 BCS schools maintain a voting majority in NCAA D1 FBS matters (66/120). That's why there will always be 6 BCS leagues - to maintain the voting majority and control of the post season. The Mids can't install a playoff. Now, this is a crazy reach but if the FBS Mids and some FCS teams could somehow form a football coalition we could have a D1 championship.
this is a great idea. They WOULD make more money. I know I'd watch. These guys SHOULD do it. I can't believe that I didn't think of that. I choose a small conference playoff over meaningless bcs games any day of the week. They could become the new D-1 power teams. I'd personally rather play for a team who plays it out on the field instead of leaving it up to the voters.
Unfortunately money is what this all comes down to... The bowl games last year made $222,000,000 (yes that's 222million) for the NCAA conferences and their schools. And if you read the latest they approved two more bowl games for next season. Although they did pass on the Rocky Mountain Bowl, sorry Utah... So there are now 34 bowl games, that means 68 teams make it.
I always thought bowl games were a reward, now it looks like you have to play your way out of them rather than into them.
Back to the original thought on this thread, non BCS conferences/teams cannot legally start their own play off system. The NCAA mandates the numbers of games any team can play. currently 12 games unless you conference has 12 or more teams, then you can add a conference championship. Then teams get one bowl game.
So... the non BCS teams would have to give up three or four conference games to even attempt a play off. Which while it would be fun to watch, still wouldn't mean anything as long as the big conferences reject the results, which they would, something to do with $14 million for a BCS bowl game.
The only way to do this, is for the no BCS conferences to withdraw from the NCAA and start their own Collegiate sports organization, and I don't see that happening. Although a realistic threat that this could happen might sway some opinions.... nah I'll stick to my first thought, this would never happen... Too bad for us fans though!!!
So your saying that we would have to give up our trips to Ohio State, Michigan, Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, etc...without getting a return trip use those games in order to play it off.
I'm on board, lets see if we can convince those 43 schools that play money losing football.
And all that money from the bowls, my school had to PAY to go their bowl, the bowl revenue didnt cover the expense, but the TV exposure was the only thing to make it worthwhile. Thats a great system, when some schools have to pay to be in it and others make millions of dollars for not even being good enough to make a bowl. I love the fact that Duke University with a sorry football program that rarely wins a conference game and an endowment of 5 Billion dollars gets about 4-5 million a year from the BCS when legit football schools have to pay to play in a bowl.
