Who do you think is the leader of the Mets ala Hernandez or Carter? I look in the dugout and I just don't see a vocal kick you in the ass kind of leader. Do you?
No. There really hasn't been one for a few years. Word was, when Lo Duca was here, he was the closest thing to it. But he obviously wasn't any where near Hernandez or Carter. Probably the last person who came closest was John Franco.
If you're looking for that loud mouth rah rah type of leader, then I don't think the Mets have one. The Mets has a list of leaders that lead in other area; such as on-field play, media coverage, mentorship etc. It's hard for anyone to be that rah rah leader (as a player) right now anyway. No one is consistent enough to tell another the player to get off his a$$ and produce. Well.. maybe Ryan Church , but he's a newcomer so that's not his position. Like someone said before Paul Lo Duca was that person, but that's because his personality was just that.. LOUD!
I think Wright will become this type of leader eventually, but he doesn't quite have the experience yet. Give him a couple more years and he can lead the Mets for the rest of his career.
we have a few leaders on the team but no one in particular. wagner is our bullpen leader, pedro is our starters leader and wright is our offense leader and reyes is our defense leader. no body really takes total control, but in a few years perhaps months, it will be #5...he is going to be our on and off field captain.
13-0, who the ef is going to have a players only meeting and get this team in order. I agree that you don't need to be the get in your face leader but this team lacks leadership.
Ha! Billy Wagner does seem like he can be the bitter drunken uncle, but he has always been that guy that calls out his teammates ... He called out Pat Burrell and some of the other Phillies (Booby Abreau maybe? Not Sure.) That's why Philly traded him away cuz he would get in guy's faces about not showing up to play.
i think the leader of the Mets i Carlos Delgado. Now although he is obviously struggling this season he brings great veteran leadership to a relativaly young mets bench. After he is gone though it will be time for David Wright to step up into a leadership role and lead the mets to a world series
It's funny to see a closer mouthing off. Billy Wagner saying something to the media about players not stepping up is like Mike Vanderjagt telling Peyton Manning to man up. While someone really needs to do it, I don't think it should be someone who's job is to get 3 points... I mean 3 outs.
I have to agree with Faema ... Does it really matter who takes charge on the Mets? In a perfect world, fans would love to see Carlos Beltran (quiet personality and not off to a great start this season), David Wright (too young still?) or Brian Schneider (New to the team and hurt for half the games so far) become the leader of this team. But what is wrong with a Billy Wagner taking the reigns as the vocal leader on this team? At the very least he says what fans are stating on these boards. At the very least he's saying something other than "We're going to be okay."
Hey ... 2 years ago, the Mets had Julio Franco ... He led the team (forced Beltran to take a curtain call), it's not like he was an everyday player. Face facts ... There is no Robin Ventura, Keith Hernandez or Ray Knight coming into that locker room on a daily basis to "motivate" (or a swift kick in the @$$) people.
