It sounds like a bad idea to me, however I thought it was time for him to go at the end of the '90's and now I terribly miss those days.  Here is the news report...

Stan Van Gundy stumps for Patrick Ewing as Knicks coaching candidate

Brian Schmitz | Sentinel Staff Writer

April 25, 2008

Magic Coach Stan Van Gundy on Thursday questioned why the New York Knicks might hire an inexperienced head coach when Patrick Ewing -- one of Van Gundy's assistant coaches -- is ready to do the job but apparently not a candidate.

Former Knicks guard Mark Jackson is considered by many to be a front-runner for the coaching position left vacant after the firing of Isiah Thomas. Jackson has never coached and is currently working as a television analyst.

Ewing is interested in becoming a head coach, but told the Orlando Sentinel recently he had not been contacted by the Knicks.

Van Gundy said has he has "great respect" for Jackson, but "he's never coached at all."

Ewing served as an assistant with Houston, working under Van Gundy's brother, Jeff, when Jeff was with the Rockets. "This amazes me," reiterated Stan Van Gundy. "All these names out there and they're not talking about him." He said Ewing, along with his tutoring of Howard, is organized and prepared. "I'm bewildered that one of the absolute greats in the New York Knicks' organization. . . . and they're not talking about him at all."

Magic General Manager Otis Smith said the Knicks or any other team would need permission to speak to any of his coaches.

Another question is why would Ewing want to come here?  He's a legend in NY and why tarnish that by having to deal with the mess that's been created.  Imagine he comes to NY and blows the season worse than Isiah... that would really be sad.

I'm not sold on Mark Jackson either but I'm blanking on any other candidates that could turn this around

Hi all, former NY Knicks fan here.

The Knicks organization is a disgrace, but I think everybody knows that. What amazes me of this coach drama (as always with the Knicks) is the fact that Ewing name has not been even in the list. A guy made a poll here, and had the guts to say Ewing was categorized as "other". I know NY is a classless organization with a lot of money, but not having Ewing on th list is the lowest act the can do for the last man who gave all he had to make this organization a respectful one. They dont need to hire him, but having Mark Jackson as one of the lead candidates and not even mentioning Ewing at all, totally unacceptable.

If the names of Yao Ming, and Dwight Howard rings a bell to you, then you have Ewing's credentials as a coach. Where are Mark Jackson's credential?

Like I said before, is not that they need to hire him, is just that putting Mark Jackson above him on the list, when he is been a coach (who recently said he wants to be a headcoach - making him available for considerations) since his retirement while Jackson is just a TV analyst is the most disrespectful act this organization can do for the greatest player ever to wear orange and blue.

33 For Ever !!!! - yeah, this post was completely biased. I am a Patrick Ewing fan. GO MAGICS !!!!
