It is going to be tough for the Longhorns to get =effcoat, who is the top
recruit in the country in the class that will be =uniors this football season,
but Texas is high on the list of most of the other =op kids in that class.
Future Horns Track Stars
D. J. Monroe of Angleton, who has signed to play =ootball at Texas, won his
regional 100-mmeter dash in 10.47 and anchored the =inning 400-meter relay team
in 41.34.
Monroe won the Class 4A 100-meter state title as a =ophomore, but was injured
last track season.
LaKeidra Stewart, the Mansfield Timberview sprinter =ho has signed to run
track at Texas, won her region 100 in 11.44, 200 in =3.26 and she also anchored
the winning 400-meter relay.
Julie Amthor of Smithson Valley, another women's =rack recruit, won her Class
4A regional in the 800 meters in 2:12.89, and =ictoria Lucas of Midland,
another UT signee, had a 6-0.25 in the high jump to =in her region.
Five Longhorns Drafted
WR Limas Sweed was the first Longhorn chosen in the =FL draft, going in the
second round to Pittsburgh as the 53rd overall =ick.
Other Texas players chosen were RB Jamaal Charles in =he third round by
Kansas City as the 73rd overall pick, TE Jermichael =inley in the third round by
Green Bay as the 91st pick, OT Tony Hills in the =ourth round to Pittsburgh as
the 130th pick, and DT Frank Okam in the fifth round =y Houston as the 151st
