Hey, gang. I'd like to get some opinions on this as well as poll votes. What do you think of the Dolphins #1 overall selection of Michigan OT Jake Long?
5's for all respectful posts.

Charlie, defense wins championships! They should draft defense. But hey, a stud offensive linemen to protect your QB's blindside isn't a bad move either. Have a great day pimp.

I think that they picked the wrong Long. Mark my words, Chris Long will end up being "The Stud" of this draft.

Offensive line is the anchor to the whole offense, all due respect to QBs. Without an anchor on that line, nothing else can go forward. If you have a stud running back making cuts 4 yards deep, he is going to average 2 yds a carry. If you have a stud QB making throws at 1.5 seconds instead of 3-5 seconds, you are going to have bad incompletion ratio and bad TD/Interception ratio. Getting a stud O-lineman early in the Tunas tenure was the smartest move they could make. getting him signed 3 days before the draft is just shear genius, and I am not a Bill Parcells fan. The Miami Dolphins could have taken a QB that would have not developed. They could have taken Chris Long and the defense would have improved, but they also would not have been able to score points again this year and this atleast Jake Long gives them a chance at improving on offense. Best move I have seen in a long time.

Excellent Choice. He'll be Stud in this league for years. Clearly the Dolphins need to be in re-building mode. Re-building starts up front. You need OL and DL and build your talent around that. Ryan is a risky pick @ #1. He has David Carr written all over him. Chris Long and Dorsey would have also been good choices, but there is no way you can go wrong with the best Tackle in the draft.

I like the move. When you are rebuilding like the Dolphins are, you need to start with a guy who will protect your QB for years to come, and Long can be that guy.

That offense was horrible even with Chambers and Ronnie Brown. Best way to fix an ailing Offense is to fix the o-line, Parcels loves big strong lineman and this is a perfect fit. You protect your quarterback you have success its as simple as that. The Adition of Justin Smiley and the signing of Jake Long is fantastic, I can also see them suprising poeple and picking someone like Sam Baker from USC in the second to help solidify yet another o-line position. Perhaps a trade of Jason Taylor for a pick would help them on the defensive side as well. Great Pick! To me Jake Long has been the best player in this draft anyhow.

I think Jake Long was a perfect pick. Statistically, if you look at positons-per-bust, I think OL would be the least likely to be a complete flop. Even if J-Lo doesn't become a total dominant Orlando Pace HOF type OL, he will be at the least a very good one. I think for a team like Miami needing help in so many places, O-line was a great place to get a pick as a starting point. Also by taking J-Lo, he comes low maintenance and in today's perception concious NFL a safe pick. He's a UM product so I'm proud, but he is a very solid pick.

i'm not sold on the pick, to be honest. i've read all the reviews, all the posts, and just about all the information i can get my deprived hands on. but it seems to me that everyone forgets that for every "stud" o-line pick (especially in the first round) there are many more that end up to be busts, or at best just a decent mainstay on the line. i am a firm believer in the value of the offensive line (having family who played guard, for the Dolphins even. well, was on the team at least) but there have been many finds later in the draft. even the ones taken early in the first usually take time to develop. not that other positions don't need the development, but it seems to me like other positions tend to have more impact right away. if they are saying that it is the first step in a LONG term plan, that's fine (if he pans out, not like someone like gallery) and with j long, he can protect beck all day long, what happens then? there offense, even with him, isn't strong enough to contend in the division, imo. they could have had a better shot adding defense to try and hold other teams, especially with the addition of smiley. just think of c long, gohlston, or dorsey learning from taylor for a year.
thanks for reading

drafting Jake Long was a great move parcels and ireland did their homework they could have went defense and took dorsey or c. long but they took a chance and got Phillip Merling in the second this guy is top 15 in the draft if he didnt have a sports hernia so they hit both sides of the ball right off the bat then picked up hoprfully our next franchise q.b in henne to be honest i think you will see miamis first three picks starting this year

I like the move, but not all that thrilled either, they say defense wins championships ie: the Giants this last year, but having somone to keep your QB off his head a few more times is probably a good move as well its a Catch 22
