Brown Says Horns Ready to Fight for Every Game
Head football coach Mack Brown said Monday the Longhorns had a very good and very productive spring training, but he said the team "still has a lot of work to do" to meet its goals for the 2008 season.
He also said the Big 12 conference "will be the best balanced league since I've been here. Kansas and Missouri are both listed above us." Oklahoma also is listed above the Longhorns in the pre-season polls.
The Longhorn players have been told by the coaches and have bought into the message that they are going to have to be ready to play every week because the league will be so competitive, Brown said.
"We have told them they have to earn the right to win a game," he said, adding that most of the teams have most of their key players back, including 11 of the 12 teams who will have their 2007 quarterback on hand for the 2008 season.
He said Texas has won some games in the past with ease, but he said that won't be the case this year.
New defensive coordinator Will Muschamp "brings great intensity," Brown said, and he said he hopes Muschamp will be able to make marked improvement in the Longhorn defense.
Oklahoma, Missouri and Kansas all head better records than Texas had last year, and all three of them have more starters returning than the Longhorns, but Brown said the Texas coaches try to recruit very talented players every year and he said it is their job to be sure new players are ready to step in when a great player graduates.
