Well, I for one now think that Eli Manning has turned a corner in his development as the Giants franchise QB.  He's improved his play, he's shown more leadership, better decision making skills on the field, better accuracy (within reason ofcourse) and earned Super Bowl MPV status (equally notable as the Giants defense).  So, that being the case, do you think now that more fans and so-called analysts and experts will begin giving Manning the respect and notoriety he deserves as the real deal after 4 years of hard work as the Giants QB?  Or will they continue to discredit him as some on-again-off-again streaky QB who really hasn't earned the right to be known as a solid QB in this league who doesn't show enough leadership on the field?  In my opinion, Eli Manning surely isn't his brother Peyton....he's not flashy, he's not overly emotional on the field, and he doesn't throw 50 TD passes during the season....but you know what, he doesn't have to...he simply does whatever he must in order to win, and that's the stat that matters most in the NFL...not yards, TD, or INT.
What I find truly funny is that over on the Chargers board, there's another poll up about Rivers vs. Manning in terms of who's currently the better and most well-developed QB.....naturally the homerism factor set the results at 67% Rivers and 34% Manning which those fans justify by saying that Rivers leads Manning in stats, leadership, faster QB development, etc...yet Manning leads Rivers in the only stat that truly matters in the NFL.....Super Bowl/playoff victories.
Your thoughts?

In my opinion, it doesn't really matter what San Diego thinks about Eli, they need to understand the whole situation regarding Eli started when the turned their nose at Payton for Ryan Leaf. Therefore the Mannings, as a whole do not like the Charger franchise, Eli had no choice but to refuse to go there, the Chargers had their chance to get a Manning and they blew it. If they're happy with Rivers then good for them, if not they also should be happy with the other players they received via that trade, like merrimen, so regardless they should not be complaining or worrying about who is better, Eli was never gonna play for them anyway.

As for respect or disrespect. Eli will never get the total respect he deserves, he will probably get the promotion from average NFL QB to above average QB, maybe. as a Giants fan I love Eli. As long as Eli manages the game and stops trying to be Marino/Favre (which he usually winds up looking like jeff george), I'm happy cause then at least we'll have a shot at winning our games.

Fans of most teams hate Eli and will continue to hate him because 1. He's a Manning and 2. The Chargers deal.

The biggest joke to me is the Steelers fans who talk about how Eli has been carried his entire career by the defense and running game but Ben is the third best QB in the league behind Brady and Peyton.

Meanwhile in 3 years starting Eli has had a bottom 10 defense twice, compiling a 19-13 record in those two years and making the playoffs both times.  Finally the defense shapes up into a top 10 unit and the Giants win the Super Bowl.  The Steelers on the other hand have had a top 5 defense every year except 2006 (still top 10) and #1 twice.

As for the running game, the Giants have been top 10 every year, making the top 5 this past year.  The Steelers have been top 10 every year also, but have been top 5 3 times and rank above the Giants every year except 2006.

Notice that 2006 was the only year of Ben's career so far when the Steelers have ranked lower than 5 in either category.  What happened that year?  Ben lead the league in interceptions, throwing 23 Ints to just 18 TDs.

But somehow Ben carries the team the victory while Eli gets carried.  Eli out preforms every QB in the playoffs this year but the defense won it for them.  Ben has a 22 rating in the SB but "without him the Steelers don't even get there."  What a joke.

Great post.  I think the "experts" will always be hard on Eli because of the Chargers trade.  If he can come out and play this season like he did in the playoffs, he will silence a lot of people.  I know they should be silenced already since he did win MVP in the Super Bowl.  If he comes out and has a bad game like the Vikings game last year (cringes) they will say he regressed from his playoffs form and we will be back to square one.  I honsetly believe that in the situation he's in, he won't be able to win over people no matter how he plays.  I personally am so thankful he's on our team after having some pretty bad QB's Dave Brown, Danny Kannell, Kent Graham, etc.

Eli Manning is a special quarterback because he has all the tools. Now lets talk about surrounding cast for a sec. Philip Rivers has a great surrounding cast with Antonio Gates and Landanian Tomlinson. What Philip Rivers do not have is that game clutching play. He does not win games for them at the end. I think he is going to be a good quarterback in the league, but I dont see him being as good as Eli Manning. Eli Manning is a great quarterback for what he did in the playoffs. That is how great quarterbacks are remembered for the time they excelled during difficulty. As for who made out in the trade both teams. The Chargers wanted a good quarterback and a pass rusher. Which they got and a pro bowl kicker. The Giants got a leader a quarterback and a super bowl victory. Yes Shawn Merriam is a great player, but he is not a player that would change the game for the Giants. Eli Manning  was the best quarterback available and that is what the Giants wanted. We had tough years and no luck with drafting a good quarterback since Phil Simms. Right now Eli Manning is the number one quarterback from that draft class because without him I think we can all agree that the Giants would not have made the playoffs. Now without Philip Rivers how far of drop off will the chargers be??? I think they are a playoff team without Rivers.

IF HE PLAYS THE SAME WAY THIS WHOLE SEASON AS HE DID IN THE PLAYOFFS THEN I THINK WE CAN SAY HE IS ONE OF THE TOP 5 QB'S IN THE NFL. HE HAD A HOT 4 GAMES BIG DEAL BUT WE NEED TO SEE IT WEEK IN WEEK OUT IF HE CAN GET THE INTERCEPTIONS INTO SINGLE DIGITS ASWELL THAT WOULD BE FANTASTIC

Steras99, "Big Deal" you say?___I know they were only 4 games in which he played very well, but he did it against the TOP 3 OFFENSES:

-1st NE

-2nd GREEN BAY

-3rd DALLAS

He won against  3 OF THE TOP 4 QUARTERBACKS , [much credit to the defense, ofcourse]

He did it against 4 OF THE TOP 11 DEFENSES

And he did it on the road, in the playoffs!; which included the 2nd most coldest game in history, if I'm not mistaken.

Oh.___Let's not forget how well he played against the Pat's in week 17, either.___An instant classic.

So Eli Manning went on a tear, and has proven that he can win.___Period.___Regardless of what ANYBODY SAYS , they can't deny that.___To do so means people don't know much about football, or that your biased in some way, or you simply don't like him.

The so called "experts" that Tikis-Barber refers to only prove to me every year that they have no idea what the hell they're talking about half, if not most of, the time.___I think Manning definately earned some respect, but will still get criticized if he has bad games.___On a scale of 1-10, 10 being the harshest criticism, I say its gone from an 8 to maybe 3, or 4.___He will have to cintinue his level of play for a while in order to really start getting top respect.___That means another playoff appearance, and getting back, at minimum, to the Divisional Championship next season.

One footnote.___That's based on their seeding.___In other words, he'll have to play in atleast 2 rounds of the playoffs in order to get more of a [Pro Bowl Worthy] reputation and respect.
