What charity would possibly want a shredded Red Sox jersey that's been dug out of wet cement on a construction site?  What would they do, auction it off?  Is there seriously a market for that sort of thing?

supposedly the Yankees are sending it to the Jimmy Fund. I believe the Jimmy Fund is for sick Children, based in Boston and spearheaded by the Red Sox. The yankees for years have supported this fund in different ways. actually the yankees are one of the most giving sports organizations around.

There is a market for any item that gains notoriety... especially something like this in the world of baseball involving the Yankees and Red Sox. It will definitely be a sought after object now, why do you think that people pay hundreds of thousands and even millions of dollars for baseballs that were historically significant. They can auction off and sell the jersey to some rich baseball fan and then the money will be given to this charity...

mikiede is right. George has been a big contributer to the Jimmy Fund, which funds research into childhood cancer. It would have made more sense though for the Yankees to donate the expenses of digging up the shirt to a worthy charity rather than to make such a silly gesture.

And to the poster who said that the worker who buried the shirt did something "wrong." Huh? Did the worker cost the team time or money by burying the shirt? Did this piece of fabric undermine the strength of the concrete? For such a crime, the Yankees fans on the construction crew definitely should have kicked the s*** out of the guy who buried the shirt.

People will buy anything. I don't understand how owning this item means anything or has any value, but someone will pay money for it.

Did you miss the whole chewed gum auction on Ebay about 5 years back?  If someone is stupid enough to buy chewed bubble gum by a pro baseball player than yes someone is actually stupid enough to buy this jersey.

nough sed.

I think that's about what they pay A-Rod to walk from the on deck circle to the batters box.  I don't think cost will be an issue here. : )
