i am a Jets fan..don't shoot...to me he seemed like a mediocre safety...and in a thread on the jets board a Raiders fan thinks he's like an all pro...maybe he is and i'm wrong...what are your thoughts on him, were you mad they didn't re-sign him and if you wanna come to that thread and post your opinion..that would be cool

Gibril is very solid against the run and about average versus the pass. He's always around the ball, and is really more of a strong safety than a free safety in my opinion. He's lead all NFL safeties in tackles since he entered the lead, so that might tell you a bit about how active he is in run support.

If you want to compare his numbers to pro-bowl players you will see they aren't that far off. He actually put up better stats than Roy Williams, and had 30 more tackles and only one less interception than Ken Hamlin in 3 less games.

He's not all-pro, but I would say he's in the upper echelon of safeties in the league. Average against the pass and very good vs. the run. In my opinion he is actually among the top 5 in run support. Some will argue, but all I'll say is look at the numbers. He just flat out gets a ton of tackles for his position.

does that mean you are pissed he wasn't re-signed?  do you think the Raiders overpaid?  also the more tackles a safety has leads me to believe that the rb is getting into the second level more and that's not a good thing...unless he was in the box all the time but i  can't imagine he would be

Hey I gave a more detailed post on the other thread. I think the Raiders overpaid and I'm glad we didn't match. You're right, tackles get racked up for safeties because there are completions in front of him.

He does play in the box more than you would think, but not all the time. Him and Butler really took turns closer to the line....although he had the tag "FS" last season he played as if he was strong just as much. He makes a good chunk of tackles in run support. A lot of them are after 5-8 yard gains. You're right, the RB had to get past the first level, but Gibril does get to the line in a hurry and he doesn't miss many tackles.

Like I said, the Raiders overpaid on him just like they did on pretty much everyone else this offseason, but in my opinion he is an above average player who will be better at SS than FS.

It's hard to miss him now, in the off-season. But I think we will be fine without him this upcoming season. We didn't want to pay him Raiders money. We just really need to keep up the pass rush and that should cover our secondary. Not the way I would do it but it is a way.

I'll let you know after a few games net season whether I miss him.

Gibril Wilson was more than a adequate safety for us and i hated to see him go but no way he warrant all that money the Raiders gave him. I think if he had better hands he would've been a top notch safety.
