Jim Rutherford
On the status of coach Peter Laviolette, Rutherford reiterated his "everyone is under review" stance from earlier in the season.  While he praised the team's style of play under Laviolette, Rutherford was somewhat critical of the decision to hurry injured players back into the lineup at the end of the season.

“The injuries had something to do with the end, because of the last game and we put players back into our lineup that were not ready to play, and it wasn’t fair to the players and it wasn’t fair to the overall team," he said.  "In that sense it affected it.

Other than re-signing Samsonov, Rutherford also said he would like to make changes to the team's defense.  While the status of unrestricted free agents Hurricanes.nhl.com/team/app/?service=page&page=PlayerDetail&playerId=8456547">Bret Hedican and Glen Wesley is uncertain for next season, the Canes' GM said he would like to strengthen that unit, likely by trading one of the team's forwards.  Rutherford said the team would have approximately 10 or 11 forwards who could play in the top nine, which would help facilitate such a trade.

"I would suspect, based on what our budget will be for our team, that it would be more apt that we would trade a player for a defenseman, or trade two players for two defensemen, because if we don’t we can’t offset the money," said Rutherford.  "The fact that we have extra forwards, I would suspect that would be the way we do it.”

I would be surprised to Lavi go, I am wondering about Jeff Daniels or maybe the trainers for bringing guys back in to early at the end.

I would be happy to Wesley and Hedican go.  They are good players but we need to get some younger bigger guys back there.  More Gleason's and Corvo's, too bad we cant clone them.

Please post comments.

I agree with you about Lavi, he needs to stay.  Who else out there is better than him?

I caught a bit of the press conference with Rutherford and he said something that got me upset.  He spoke about that 30-35 game stretch where we stunk up the NHL, ultimately costing us the Division.  Well, during that time, what did he do to make the team better?  He got rid of Craig Adams.  It wasn't until he then grabbed Samsonov that we started to turn it around.  The deals for Corvo and Ruutu didn't happen until a couple of weeks after that.  So, Rutherford should also look in the mirror with his criticism.  Had he done something sooner, that black time in the schedule may have been reduced to only a couple of weeks, instead of months.

I would bet that Grahame will be gone after reading this article.  Michael Leighton has been named the AHL player of the year.  Dump Grahame and bring that man up for next season.  Give Cam a break on those back to backs, and maybe get some wins from the backup.

JR said he was going trade some forwards.  He mentioned that Larose is showing signs that he can be a top 9 guy.  He also said that he going to sign Samsonov.  There is no way he trades Staal or Brindy.  That leaves Whitney, Williams, Cole, Ruutu, Walker in a different uniform come next season.  Who will that be??  Cole is obviously overpaid, so it's tough to move him.  Maybe some draft picks to free up the salary to sign a UFA defenseman.  Redden (too expensive) and Brad Stuart are UFAs but JR doesn't go after big names.  I bet he'll bring in lesser known, emerging D-men from that UFA list.  Whitney and Walker bring great value when healthy and would be surprised to see them traded.  JR could dangle Williams but now he's had 2 major surgeries on his knee, damaged goods like Cole.  Ruutu is an RFA which don't often get big returns.  If JR really wants a quality D-man in return, his only option is getting lucky with moving Cole or Williams.  Should be an interesting few months.

I forgot to mention Cullen and Eaves.  Wow, we do have a lot of forwards!  Cullen is too important to this team which is why they brought him back, so I doubt he gets traded.  Eaves could provide offense at a pretty cheap price, so it's best to hang onto him.  I would still love to see JR move Cole, if he can.

Eaves is a restricted free agent, so they would have to sign him to a user friendly contract first before trading him.  Whitney is probably the odd man out.  Plus, he can get back some decent players.

I agree that Cole and Williams are probably the odd men out.  I do not see JR trading away the play making ability of Whitney.  Cole has never turned into the 30 goal scorer they thought he would.  Williams may be hard to move with the bum knees.  Eaves is young but did not show any signs of life before he went on the DL.

Forwards(10) - Brindy, Stall, Samsanov, LaRose, Whitney, Cullen, Letowski, Walker, Bayda and Rutuu

Out - Williams, Cole, Brookbank, Hamilton,  Aucoin and Eaves

Defense (5)- Corvo, Gleason, Wallin, Conboy,  Seidenberg(maybe) and Kaberle(maybe)

Out - Hedican, Wesley (coach), Tanabe

Goal - Ward

Out - Grahame

There is speculation that JR wants to go after Joni Pitkanen again.  Hedican't and Wesley are done - too old and too slow.  Tanabe is looking for an injury settlement and he is done.  Grahame just sucks - Bring up Leighton - he may give Ward a run for his money.

I posted this on the wrong thread, it was supposed to go here.

Any one else hear JR comments on the radio last week? Is he seriously trying to throw Lavie under the bus for this season ending mess? I think the coach did an amazing job, considering all the injuries and the fact that we had 40-50% of our AHL team in Canes jerseys on the ice some nights.

JR needs to look in the mirror if he wants someone to blame.

Does Lavie keep signing mediocre players to long term deals with "no-trade" clauses?  NO

Does Lavie keep resigning broken down D-men instead of finding some fresher legs?  NO

This team would be much worse off without coach Lavie, who could get another job in about 15 minutes if JR ever let him go.

Not sure why the team is throwing Tannabe under the bus either? Is there more to the story than just his injuries?
