Did anyone else get a deja vu feeling about the end of regulation for the Tigers? I did, and then I remembered the '05 C-USA championship game that essentially eliminated Memphis from that year's NCAA tournament. Anyone who doesn't remember/know about it, Darius Washington(guard for Memphis) gets fouled on a 3 point attempt with essentially no time left on the clock and the Tigers down 2 points to Louisville. Of course 2 of 3 forces OT and 3 of 3 wins the game. Washington sinks the 1st free throw and then clanks the next two to lose. He immediately drops to his knees crying and Calipari and company are immediately there to pick him up off of the floor. Interestingly enough, Douglas-Roberts, Dorsey, and Dozier were all on the floor that day to see their teammate fail on clutch free throws. So.....it makes me wonder if Washington's struggles from the line in the clutch were in Douglas-Robert's thoughts in the closing 1:15 of regulation when he missed 3 consecutive free throws?
On that note, I've personally believed that Kansas is the best team in the nation pretty much all season, but not last night. I hope the Memphis kids left the locker room after the game KNOWING that Kansas had accepted the fact that they could not beat Memphis straight up at the end of regulation, and that they would/could not win the game based on their effort, but instead could only hope that Memphis would allow them to win and/or give the game away from the line. Makes it a kind of hollow win to me, but they played like champions in overtime, so I have to give credit to the Jayhawks for that.
