Metcalf was definitely nasty!! Ricky was a monster though.  He should still be tearin it up in the league.  Never should've started smoking them tweeds.

I went with Ricky despite his post college career.   He had the tenacity his Jr and Sr seasons like Earl (and was called little Earl for awhile).   He also had the outside speed like Metcalf to get around the corner.  Also, he was the third down back his soph season slight behind Preist Holmes to give you an idea of talent.

Earl definitely best pure pound - speed runner.   Metcalf pure speed runner (but had almost no line).   Benson, okay if you needed 4 yards; he was good at taking the hit and falling forward for 3 yards everytime - and that is not a slam, he just didn't have the ability to do much more.   Hodges I remember faintly but didn't stand out.

The only other back I'd put in would be Johnny "Lam" Jones for great outside speed and great open field running; not to be confused with "Bam" Jones-the big horse that ran up the middle so effectively, or Johnny "Ham" Jones.

I'd go Ricky, Metcalf, Preist Holmes, Earl, Lam Jones, Benson, and then Hodges.

This is a tough one. If you look at all purpose ability (not all purpose stats) I think the definite answer is Metcalf.  Yes, he was probably better in the return and receiving game than he was in rushing, but he was still a good rusher.  All Purpose stats are misleading if a guy is just bruising like Ricky Williams, Earl Campbell and Cedric Benson who gained most of their stats in the rush game.  Those guys were awesome running backs, but when I think of all purpose backs, I don't really think of them.  I think more of guys like Metcalf and Jamaal Charles.

wz,

i thought about that before i voted, but ricky gained almost 1000 yrds receiving over his college career.....yes, most of his yards were from rushing, but 1000 receiving isn't too shabby.

This is a tough vote for sure. You could make a convinceing argument for any of these guys. Just goes to show the amount of talent we have coming through here.
