The Marlins situation is definitely worse.  I wouldn't even want to be playing for a major league team with a payroll that low because quite frankly it is an insult to those players.  How does a team expect to get out of the cellar if there entire payroll is 21 mil.  As for A-Rod, he's worth every penny and there are plenty of other players in the league who are making astronomical amounts of money so he should not be singled out.

That point is true, SKINZ, but I still don't see how that effects baseball like the question is posed. It effects the microcosm that is the Marlins, but not the league. The only people suffering are Marlins fans. Noone else in baseabll feels it, do they?

Can ARod really be worth 28 million a year? Does he cure cancer?

Great discussion here. I agree with some that the Marlins owners are cheap. They are just looking for profit. But couldnt baseball do like they did with the expos and make them sell the team? I mean isnt not even trying bad for baseball? They are competitive for a liitle while but then they trade everyone away and go cheap again.

he tends to hold 'r's and leave out vowels. Occasionally syllables as well. I always got a kick out of listening to him. Say what you want about the man, he's brutally honest if nothing else. At least in his own mind he believes he is speaking the truth.

I usually review the whole thread before voicing my opinion,  however I'm jumping into this one in the dark.

1 word-  inflation, inflation,  inflation.  sure the Marlins have lit a wet match twice with their two world series championships primarily fielded with teams, but I don't think they'll be so lucky the third time around.   within the next 5-10 years, any team that wants to be competitive will have that 20+ million dollar man on their team.  It's simply how the way it works.  Prices go up and until the players association and MLB get together it will stay that way.

Personally I would like to see MLB move toward an earned contract as opposed to guarenteed contract.

All this, and in regards to a 15 year old expansion team that has won 2 World Series title in the last 10 seasons.

I blame Wayne Huyzinga (spelling?).... He won his first WS with an older, somewhat highly paid, free agent laden team.  He allowed for the dismantling of that team, and brought down the team payroll with younger players raised on the farm. Won the 2nd WS with a lot of those younger players, and dismantled again, bringing the payroll down further....

They don't want to spend the money on FA's and said FA's don't want to play in an empty lake. Miami is not a good town for the sport of Baseball. It is too wet, the stadium is too big. It's a football stadium converted for baseball.  Also, it doesn't help when the average age of your potential fan base is 68 years.

Hack'n has a point there.

I have often wondered why the Marlins don't move to Vegas and into the AL West division. MLB could then move the Pirates into the nl east division. I guess the only downfall is having both Pennsylvania teams in the east, however the NL west does field 3 california teams.

This would get the Marlins a decent fan base, a new stadium and a place to make a brand new start while making it an even playing field in all of the divisions.

I agree with some that the Marlins owners are cheap.

....true....yes and no.......after the marlins won the series in 97.....they had their firesale....they practically gutted the team.......the next year they flat out sucked.....but wait....they started adding some nice players.....pudge....lowell....dontrelle....and lo and behold......they won the series in 03......so at least they'll get some good talent once in a while....
