Major difference IMO. Roy Williams went through extreme hardships to affiliate with UNC during his younger years. Decent HS player but not enough talent to make it at a big time level like UNC. Roy had a full ride to GA Tech for an engineering scholarship but opted to walk on at UNC. After graduation he took a teaching/coaching position in NC public schools. Had a wife and at least one child when Dean Smith inquired about him being a very low level assistant. Roy gave up the teaching role to do the UNC thing and literally had to take on jobs such as selling calendars to make ends meet with a young family. I think the only reason he didn't depart for UNC after Smith first retired was because of his loyalty to the man (he was approached and one, if not UNC's top choice). Two coaches later with the interim role of Bill Guthridge and the debacle of Matt Daugherty, enough time had passed for Roy to come home (along with other factors such as aging parents).
Self, on the other hand, inspite of being an OSU alum with connections to the school would obviously only leave an elite program like KU if it were strictly for the $. Hopefully he'll realize that while the OSU position may be tantalizing with T Boone's influence, Self is young enough that the long haul at Kansas should be far superior. Granted he is not as entrenched as somebody like Kryseshki at Duke, but the comparison could be made to when K turned down the NBA's Lakers job for the stability of Duke. No, I'm not saying the Lakers and OSU are one in the same, but the motivation for moving on would almost certainly be $.
