A lot depends on wheher the administration and the AD lets him do his job and supports him rather than interfering. Dave Odom should have set a good precedent, if his record at Wake Forest is any indication. We don't hear a lot about South Carolina here in Winston-Salem, but he left the Wake program in reasonably good shape. Hiring a successful coach from a so-called "mid-major" program was a good move. Darrin Horn should have a bit less pressure than Jeff Capel would have had coming from Oklahoma, and that may give him a chance to continue building up USC's program.
South Carolina has had an uneven track record with coaches and its basketball program, especially after they left the ACC in a huff. Their best coach over the last 50 or so years was Frank McGuire, whom they hired from North Carolina. Since then, leaving the ACC, wandering in the wilderness as an independent, joining the basketball-rich SEC and having more emphasis on football than basketball have made USC a kind of "black hole" for coaches. Even McGuire was not nearly as successful at USC (the "other" Carolina) as he had been at North Carolina through the 50s and early 60s. Hopefully (for Gamecock fans) Darrin Horn will be given the chance and the tools he needs to succeed there.
