Texas is entertaining four recruits this weekend, and the Longhorns might get commitments from two of them immediately, and things are looking good with the other two.
The Longhorns already have 16 pledges and the key visitors this weekend are DTs Jamarkus McFarland of Lufkin and Calvin Howell of San Antonio Warren, DE Devon Kennard of Desert Vista HS in Phoenix, and OL Mason Walters of Wofforth Frenship.
Walters and Howell both might commit to Texas this weekend. This is the second trip to Austin for both of them in the last few weeks and both say the Longhorns are far ahead of the multitude of other schools trying to recruit them.
Walters is the state's best offensive linemen, and Howell is the state's No. 2 defensive tackle only because McFarland is the top DT recruit in the nation. Howell runs a 4.82 in the 40, and that is remarkable for a young man who is 6-4 and 280. In most years, he would be the state's top DT recruit.
Kennard, the nation's top DE, is taking two or three days to look over things in Austin, and that is a very good sign because recruits who spend that much time checking out a school are very interested in that school.
McFarland also favors Texas, but he told me he wants to check out some other schools because picking a college is such a big decision.
Kennard has already taken unofficial visits to Arizona, Arizona State and Southern Cal, and he already has more than 25 scholarship offers. McFarland has taken unofficial visits to Texas and Oklahoma, and, like Kennard, he has so many scholarship offers he can go to any school in the country.
I think Texas has a very good chance to get all three of the Texas blue chippers and it also looks like the Longhorns have close to a 50-50 chance to get Kennard.
Most or all of the 16 recruits who have committed to Texas, plus the recruits the Longhorns signed last month who will be freshmen this fall, are expected to come to the spring game Saturday.

DTs Jamarkus McFarland of Lufkin and Calvin Howell of San Antonio Warren, and DE Devon Kennard of Desert Vista HS in Phoenix all made it in for the scrimmage, and all of them appeared to be having a very good time.
Howell is leaning strongly to Texas, but he wants his mother to visit before he pulls the trigger and she was not able to make the trip with him. Nearly all the 16 current commitments and most of the incoming freshman was at the scrimmage and so were at least three top 10 sophomores - RB Lache Seastrunk, 5-10, 175, 4.3, who averaged more than 12 yards per carry in rushing for more than 1,500 yards as a sophomore, DT Jay Guy, 6-1, 305, 5.0, of Aldine Eisenhower, and WR DeAndre Perry, 6-3, 210, 4.45, Austin Bowie.

If they can get all of these guys they already have a very good class.

godly:

How many scholarships does Texas have? I thought they only had about 20.

I think every school gets 25 unless they are on probation or have any other penalties.  But our class is looking really strong so far.

The Longhorns have 17 commitments after getting a pledge Saturday from the state's top offensive lineman, Mason Walters of Wolfforth Frenship.
The other three players the Texas coaches are still recruiting are DTs. Jamarkus McFarland of Lufkin and Calvin Howell of San Antonio Warren, and DE Devon Kennard of Desert Vista HS in Phoenix and they all came to the Texas spring game Saturday on unofficial visits.
I talked to Howell today and he said he is sold on Texas and will commit to the Longhorns as soon as his mother can make the trip to Austin and meet with the UT coaches. He said she might do it this week, but he said his grandmother in North Carolina is ill and he and his mother might have to make the trip to North Carolina to see her.
"I really like Texas and I plan to commit as soon as my mother looks things over," he said.
Howell is 6-4 and 280 and he has run the 40 in 4.82, which is a sensational time for someone that size. The Longhorns are short on DTs and if they get Howell and McFarland, that would set them up for the next several years.
Kennard and McFarland were more reserved and said they had really good visits, but want to visit more schools before they make a decision. Texas leads with McFarland, and I think the Longhorns will make it to the final two with Kennard.
Sophomore RB Lache Seastrunk of Temple, who also took an unofficial visit to Texas Saturday, has run a 10.34 100 meters this year. He won his Class 5A district 100 last year as a freshman.
D. J. Monroe, the Angleton RB-CB who signed with Texas in February, ran a 10.46 in the 100 last weekend and anchored his team to wins in the 400 and 800 relays. The time of 41.05 in the 400-meter relay was the fastest in the nation so far this year.

Monroe sounds like an amazing athlete.  If Mcfarland and Kennard commit that has to gve us a top 5 recruiting class.

I don't know if any of you were hurdlers when you were in school, but Marcus Davis, the fine junior defensive back from Clear Creek who has committed to Texas, was skipping the track season this year to concentrate on getting ready for football season. But the track team needed him to try to win the district meet, so he went out last week and scored 30 points in the district meeting by placing in the hurdles and long jump and anchoring the sprint relay team. After practicing for a week, he ran the high hurdles in a regional qualifiers meet in Pearland today and ran a 14.2 fully automatic time. Folks, that is an amazing feat for a youngster who has been running the hurdles for only a week this year. . . The Longhorns have 17 junior commitments (these are kids who will be seniors when football starts) and I think they are going  to get DT Calvin Howell of San Antonio Warren and I'm still pretty optimistic about the prospects of getting DT Jamarkus McFarland of Lufkin, the top-rated junior tackle in the nation. I think Texas and LSU are his two main schools, and he now says he won't commit until after the football season, but I think Texas is still the leader because he is a very smart kid and wants a good education and Texas is a much better academic fit for him than LSU is. . . D. J. Monroe of Angleton, who signed with Texas in February, is one of the fastest football players in the country and he ran a wind-aided 10.06 in the 100 at the district meet last week. He also anchored the winning 400 and 800 relay teams and the 400 relay had the fastest time in the state. Angleton is a Class 4A school, and Monroe got nipped by a  Class 5A sprinter after they jostled each other while running in adjoining lanes at Pearland.

The Longhorns still have 17 commitments and they are likely to have to wait a good while on two of their three main targers. DT Calvin Howell of San Antonio Warren might decide what he is going to do in the next several weeks, but it looks like DT Jamarkus McFarland of Lufkin and DE Deveon Kennard of Desert Vista HS in Phoenix are going to wait several months before making their decisions. Recruiting is always a chancy thing to try to predict, but if I had to put Texas' chances on each of the three, I would put Howell at 90-10, McFarland at 60-40 and Kennard at 40-60. If those odds are right, Texas should get two or even all three, and I'd settle for any two of that threesome because all of them are very, very good prospects. The national gurus have McFarland rated as the best DT in the country and Kennard ranked as the No. 1 DE, and I agree with them, but Howell is an outstanding prospect, too, and the Longhorns have pretty good depth at most positions, but they are short on quality DTs.

The Longhorns, with 17 commitments already, and the three top prospects I wrote about yesterday still in play, are so close to being through with their next class that is time to take a quick peek at what the class after that looks like.
It is very strong in defensive linemen, with ends Jackson Jeffcoat of Plano West, Joe Okafor of Houston Bellaire and Dylan Klare of Refugio and tackles Daniel Noble of Flower Mound Marcus, Jay Guy of Aldine Eisenhower (who told me he will commit to Texas as soon as he gets offered) and D'Aires Cotton of Alief Taylor.
The Longhorns are well stocked at end right now, but most of the good ones on the team will depart by the time this class gets to college, and tackles are always hard to find. Okafor is so big (6-6, 245) that he might grow into a tackle.
