It's been a very good spring for the Cubs rookies this year but thing for sure is that Carmen Pignatiello is turning heads!  This spring he has posted a .90 ERA! Which is amazing! Untill recently the kid didn't allow a run this spring. Sean Marshall, once a starter for the Cubs is competeing with him for the final spot in the bullpen for as the only lefty. (Scott Eyre injured) My question, if you had a choice who would it be Marshall or Pignatiello?

Honestly, I like Carmen Pignatiello just on the basis that he is more familiar with being a regular reliever. They're saying Sean Marshall would be the guy that would throw two or three innings every time the starter is pulled early. Best case scenario, we could package guys that will get left out, but are talented (Sean Marshall, Matt Murton) for someone.

Piggy. Put Sean in AAA, let him start, which he's used to, and let him come up if another lefty gets hurt since we already have Leiber as the long guy,  or trade him as part of a package as Zacky said.

There is no way that Lou lets a guy named Carmen Pignatiello go to the minors - his name is pretty close to Pineilla - the Cubs will have a starter hurt at some point, and that's when Sean Marshall gets called up and receives another chance.

Piggy in the pen

hooray

Piggy wins the spot IMO. His spring training numbers are to good to ignore. Send Marshall down to AAA Iowa and let him make some starts there. Or Trade away Murton and Marshall to the Rays for Evan Longoria and call it a day. (lol, that trade would never happen, but there is always hope.)

i have to go with the pig although i dont think marshall should be demoted.. marshall IMO deserved to stay in the rotation over dempster, i dont think its right that a guy loses his job because dempster wants to be a starter now.

anyways, as it is now.. marshall looks uncomfortable comeing out of the pen and should go to iowa and start and be ready for a call up when needed.

pig had a great spring and deserves a shot at the bigs..

my question is when eyre is ready to come back in 2 weeks, who goes down??

is there going to be a 2 week battle between pig, leiber, wuertz, and hart ??? and come may does lou go to 6 men in the pen when starters should be able to go 6/7/8 innings easily and have that extra guy on the bench ??

I'd rather see Pig get the nod.  He's more familiar with life out of the pen.  And he's had a terrific Spring.  Marshall's a SP.  Let him go do what he does down in Iowa.  Keep him stretched out.  We may need him later if Dempster and/or Marquis falter.  Or as part of deadline trade.

As others have said, we need to keep Marshall as a starter. He has proved he is capable of starting in the majors so he will be great insurance in AAA.

IMO it has to be Carmen Pignatiello to stay with the Cubs. First and foremost, he's a relief pitcher. Let Sean Marshall pitch in AAA and stay on his starting rotation schedule so when we need him if someone goes down, he's ready. That's a no-brainer IMO before you even throw The Pig's sparkling spring ERA into the equation. Good post.

carmen has to get the nod to be in the pen opening day thi s would also give marshall more time to start in the minors this way he can show scouts that he can start and maybe if someone needs another pitcher we could get something in return or god forbid someone in our rotation goes down we have a back up that is conditioned to start.
