Brown Says Starting Units Will Battle in Spring Game Saturday
Texas' starting offense and defense will battle each other for a big part of Saturday's annual spring game in Royal Memorial Stadium, head coach Mack Brown said Wednesday.
Brown said the Longhorns "have been doing a lot more hitting" this spring than they usually do because "so many young players are going to be playing for us and they have to know what to expect."
The scrimmage should start at about noon Sunday, and it is going to be televised live by Fox Sports News. The festivities start inside the stadium at 11 a.m., and the kickoff for the scrimmage is expected to be at noon.
Texas has seven offensive starters back from last year's 10-3 team, but only four defensive regulars return, and Brown said the edge in experience has caused the offense to be a little ahead of the defense for most of the spring drills.
New defensive coordinator Will Muschamp is also putting in some new schemes and that is taking some time, but his players say they are excited about the aggressive attitude he brings to the team.
"He's very intense," said DE Brian Orakpo. "When he first got here and I saw how intense he was, I thought that would just last a couple of days, but he's like that every day."
"He's putting in a whole bunch of new stuff," Orakpo said. "It's going to make us better and it's going to make us more physical."
Asked if he thinks the the defense will be better in 2008 than it was in 2007, Orapko said, "We'll see when the season starts, but everybody is hungry and everybody wants to do better."
"I love the enthusiasm we have and I think it's going to take us a long way," he said.
