Now that the season has concluded, what would grade would you give Frank Martin in the 2007-2008 season? Did he exceed your expecatations? What would the result have been with Huggins?
He had the year I expected had good days with bad days. Haveing a superstar helped but probably was a distraction at times. All the young players were waiting to see what the superstar was going to do, so then they forgot to play at times. He is a first year coach and it will take another year or two to really get his feet wet.
If Huggins were here they probably would have had 4 or 5 more wins. I think they beat , George Mason, Oregon, MU, NU, and maybe Notre Dame. And who knows what would have happened in the Big 12 tourney and the NCAAS. But I was happy with the season consistancy will be the key in the future
Bob Huggins was leaving no matter who he left behind, I don't want to rate the season if "huggy" was here. If another coach had come in besides Martin, there still would have been the same type of getting used to the system. Frank has a similar approach of huggins, so the consistency was better than any other coach coming in. I think they would have lost more games if Frank wasn't the coach. I was only bothered by his strange substitions and minutes alotted were not consistent throughout the year, and as a former player, you hate not knowing how much you're gonna play and if you sit down, when you will get back in. It takes time to get back into the flow of the game when you sit for 4-6 minutes.
I think a lot of people are saying that Frank Martin had a disappointing season because he had two superstar freshmen and could only make it to the second round of the NCAA tournament. But if you look at Texas last year, they had a very similar situation last year with arguably more overall talent. They had Kevin Durant, the National Player of the Year, DJ Augustine manning the point for them, Damien James, AJ Abrams, and a much more experienced head coach in Rick Barnes. They only made it to the second round last year also, after losing to USC.
What I think you can gather from all this is that when you are as young as K-State was, you have to expect them to have some growing pains. They could've had Coach K and they still wouldn't of won the National Championship. Give Frank Martin some credit for keeping this team together (for at least a year). I think that he did about as good of a job as you can expect from a first year head coach entering this kind of situation.
I really feel that Frank Martin did a fantasic job with the team he had. He stuck to his guns about the players lossing their tempers durning the game, even if that meant that the chance of lossing the game was even greater. I applauded him and I feel as if he can do wonderful things for this program in the years to come.
