So we'll be playing the Tigers next weekend.  I'm not sure about everyone else but I think this looks like it'll be a very winnable game for the Spartans.  Any thoughts?

VERY winnable. Memphis is one of the worst free throw shooting teams in the nation, and MSU is one of the best. MSU's opponents go to the line WAY more than they should, and that's usually one of the big reason's for losing a game. Plus Memphis relies mainly on their offence, and everyone knows that the Big Ten all have great defences. It'll be a good game and i'm looking forward to it. GO GREEN!

Hey State Fans....Check out the Memphis/Texas boards.   They already have Memphis and UT playing and beating each other.  Don't they have to defeat the Green & White before they can face the Longhorns...?  Get real!  I'll take Neitzel & Lucas at the line late in a game before any Memphis shooter.

If you did not hear...

Congrats to Sparty who will be gracing the cover of the NCAA 2009 football game.

I think that Memphis will be overlooking the Spartans and looking at Texas.  I think Izzo will have MSU ready for Memphis.  MSU has a great defense and Memphis has yet to play a team with a great defense and rebounding skills.  I think it will be MSU in a return to the elite 8 and beating Texas on the way to the final four.

GO STATE !!!!

Absolutely a winnable game!  If the Spartans can have another good team performance and Morgan can get rolling I think their chances of beating Memphis are good.

Dave and mch, I agree with both of you.  Except I'm expecting to see Stanford and not Texas.  I think the Lopez Twins will shut Augustine and company down making it hard for Texas to win.  Just like Memphis will overlook MSU I feel Texas may do the same looking for Memphis.  I wouldn't mind a Pac-10, Big-10 matchup in the elite 8.  But I think we'd have more trouble with Stanford then with Texas.

Granted I think like all the Spartan faithful, I'm a little biased, but... I think this is State's chance at redemption. Their pre-season ranking was awarded for a reason, now it's time to live up to the billing after a lackluster regular season. IMO, if State can not commit stupid fouls like they did when they had Wisconsin beat in the BTT, and keeping Ray Morgan out most of the game... State can certainly win. They're going to have to have a TEAM performance, with Morgan scoring more than four points, and less turnovers.

Agreed MSUSPARTY#1 - have I ever told you that I love that avatar? Chewbacca cupping Princess Leai's breasts -> classic. Is that an SNL skit?

...Anyhoo...I think Memphis might be our toughest challenge to the Final Four. And I just become more confident that we will win it the more I think about it. There's no doubt I'll need a second application of deoderant though when the game comes on. It should be fun to watch down to the final seconds.

GO STATE!

Classic post as always Erbrown.  I'm not sure where it came from.  I always try to have creative avatars for my Fantasy Football league.  I had Jenny Granholms face in it for a while but figured the classic look would be better for the national venue.

I'm really looking foreward to the game.  I think it will come down to Memphis's free throw capability.  I posted this below to a Memphis post below:

Coco I think that you're right about the free throw subject but very wrong about slipping past Michigan State if they don't hit their free throws.  I think that this will be a great contest next Friday but if Memphis can't hit their free throws against State, they are done.  In every game (but one) MSU has lost this year, it's been at the charity stripe.  The free throws and point difference for each loss are UCLA 19-31 5 point loss, Iowa 16-29 7 point loss, Penn State 16-20 9 point loss, Purdue 11-14 6 point loss, Wisconsin (got stomped) not free throws, Ohio State 14-20 9 point loss.

All but Wisconsin were due to State's propensity to foul.  If Memphis can't make their shots, State will win.  Also just a note, Michigan State has already beat Texas.  We'll be ready Friday so I hope that the Tigers aren't looking to far ahead.  I'm looking forward to a great game and may the best team win.

I think Izzo is going to stretch the bench more...kind of like hack Shaq..but the whole team..I wonder how much playing time Ibok,Herzog,Dahlman or Gray will get to chew up some fouls..just a thought
