I have to go with El Duque.. he's not really a bullpen pitcher and he doesnt want to be in there... Pelfrey has done nothing to earn the spot, at least El Duque can fall back on his reputation and his performance last before his injury.. Send Pelfrey to the minors for work.. He needs innings.

Move Pelfrey to the pen, and sign Claudio Vargas to eat some innings... Send El Duque to "extended spring training" and place him on the DL while he learns how to throw with his new delivery.

Give Sosa the nod at 5th starter. That frees up a bullpen spot for either smith or figuero to prove which is ready for the primetime. el dookie and sanchez need about 3 more years to recover from gayness.

Why would Sosa get the nod over Pelfrey of El Duque?  I honestly think Pelfrey should be tested and given at least the first month to try out as the 5th starter. It presents a perfect opportunity with El Duque still tweaking his wind up.  We have a lot in invested in Pelfrey as our shining prospect.  El Duque should be placed in the bullpen if Pelfrey shows success.  I thought that when El Duque was in the bullpen for the ChiSox it made all the difference in winning them their world series.  Sounds like a taste of success the Mets would like come October.

As of now, I think Sosa should get the nod over Pelfrey & El Duque, simply because as of now, he's pitching the best of the 3.  This may not be decided until Sun., but if the season were to start tomorrow, I'd have Sosa as 5th starter, Pelfrey as AAA ace, & El Duque on the DL.  See how Sosa does for 1 or 2 starts, how Pelfrey does in a few AAA starts, & how El Duque does in some rehab & take it from there.

Did i just see Vargas' name come up for contention talks for our #5?!  god save us all! haha

I like the list Bill M is using.  El Duque needs to go to the DL to continue to Rehab, and if he is not happy with that, he should consider his career done.  Pelfry still has options left, and should be used to keep him working on his mechanics.  Sosa, assuming the pen is strong enough without him, would be a MUCH BETTER inning eater than Vargas - who remembers him pitching last year... the Mets has so little faith in him the rested ALL of their star players and chalked the game to a loss before the first pitch (they actually won that won too... go backups!)

Keeping the post alive... responding to myself.

It looks like El Duque may have just taken the #5 spot.  5 innings, 1 hit in the second, 3 hits and one run in the third, 2 Ks, one walk against what looks like the Baltimore Oriels starting line up (so the equivalent of a minor league club)
The Mets were just looking for an excuse to put him in the number 5 spot, and assuming he doesn't feel any discomfort after this outing in his foot, I can't imagine them not using him as the #5.

Now it's Mike Pelfry's turn to show up, unfortunately for him, the Oriels have already started subbing, and the second half just doesn't look as impressive.  This will hopefully lead to a sured up #5 and Pelfy starting down in AAA like we all wanted.

Well Pelfrey gets hit hard again, his ERA is I think 8.14 with 17 innings pitched. Looks like its El Duque reverting back to his old high kick delivery. Lets all say a prayer. #5 is wild for the Mets starting rotation.
