What is up with the big ten officiating the last couple nights. In my mind they made some very questionable calls in the Indiana game. It seemed like everytime Gordon touched the ball it was automatically a foul. And today! I doubt it changed the outcome of the game but what was up with the call late. First they blow the whistle as if it is an official time out for an injured player, and then after watching the review they shave extra seconds off the clock. I would have been fine if they had called Hoffarber for a foul. He did rake the guy in the eyes, but the refs didn't do that. I would have been fine if they called traveling, but they didn't do that either. That was the only two calls that could have been made. I could see if the Indiana player was under control standing with the ball when he went to his eyes, but he was still out of control. And how do they come up with 4 point whatever left when after about 20 replays on cbs it was right around 7.5 to 8 seconds left. I hope tubby writes a little note to the head of officials just to let them now that calls like that are hurting the league. I maybe looking at it from a fans perspective, but the announcers who are nuetral said the same thing.

I couldn't agree more ! I watched the OHIO STATE / Michigan State game , which was close , until the refs called 3 PF's on the same player in 50 seconds , then a tech foul which extended a slim MSU lead by 7 points at a crucial time in the game ( late 2nd half ) the announcers also voiced their disbelief at the calls . . . Interestingly enough , tho the announcers BOTH commented on the bad calls , ESPN , did NOT . When the " highlights " ( HA !!! lowlights ! ) were shown , these calls were NOT commented on , nor the incidents shown , tho they were pivotal in the eventual outcome of the game .

In the Illinois game, at the end, the seconds were shaved off the clock because the clock was started late. It was also stopped late too but the starting late was more than the stopping late.

If the play starts and the clock isn't started, shouldn't the whistle blow and the play started over. If the clock didn't start the Gophers should have the ball out of bounds.

You guys have hit something here I have been thinking about fora long time. it seems as if Big Ten refs will make a lot of questionable calls. On the Big Ten Network and even at the Barn controversial replays are NEVER shown.
I believe that B10 refs are the kings of "Make up" calls. A play will occur that deserves a whistle, but the refs will not call it. They will decide to call a foul on something trivial on the next possession. I have seen this happen quite a few times.
On a side note, the Big Ten Network WILL NOT show any replay that is in the least bit controversial. This doesnt even allow the people in the venue to see a replay. I don't know if the B10 just doesn't want their refs looking bad on TV or what the deal is, but the officiating is not the greatest in the Big Ten.

I totally agree. CBS did a good job about pointing out what should have been called. Officiating in college basketball seems to have been down around the entire NCAA. Cal and Stanford fans wish they could have gotten calls like those bad ones against the Gophers last week.

It was so hard to watch at the end against Indiana and Illinois because you just knew there had to be a bad call eventually.

Even though the Gophers pulled out the victory in the Indiana game, they refs should be suspended for calling two stupid fouls in the last 20 seconds of a game. I mean on the free throw miss, they showed the aerial view from the ceiling, and you could see plane as day the white was throwing gophers out of the way, and then they call it on the gophers and send white to the line. Every referee knows that in the last 10 seconds of a game, you don't call a foul like that. Especially under the basket when teams are fighting for the ball. It is a no call because both teams are pushing eachother. You can't blow your whistle and just ini-mini-minie-mo it. Until Hoffarber hit that game winner, I had never been so mad at the officials. Those guys should be penalized! I hope Smith and his staff are going to do something about it.
On another note, I am very pleased with the job Tubby did with this team. I mean to get 20 wins out of this group is fantastic. You can't blame him for his players inconsistent play. I can't wait until next year, I see big things for this team. I am also glad that Tollackson will be gone, I think he killed us at times this year. I mean we played alot better without him in Indiana, as opposed to how we played against illinois. So good season overall, look forward to next year!

The refs were a joke for both the indiana and illinois game. in the illinois game, they shaved off some seconds, which was correct, but the ref blew the whistle because a player was hit in the eye. he didn't call a foul or a travel, and then they just gave the ball to illinois. i have reffed some games in my life, and that was terrible. that is either a foul or a travel. refs in the big ten are a joke...

Illinois did outplay us in the tourney, so I'm not blaming the officials for the loss, but there were 2 critical mistakes by the officials that prevented us from tying the game within the last minute. Damien Johnson was clearly shooting when he was fouled because the ball was above his shoulders mov | |
