duke has fallen below expectation more than MD....................wow, you are hilarious.  I'm glad to see you dont expect a lot from MD.  I aint even arguing it anymore.  If ya'll are enjoying the NIT, then changing the team around is not for you.  I for one would like to see us get back to contending....................in the NCAA!!

I agree there is no way that Gary can be defended...dont get me wrong, I love the guy but the way he recruits and the way that it shows on the court are parallel...the same results every year since Dixon, Blake, Wilcox, and the 'ship team left...failure...yah they beat NC and Duke a lot but that isnt good enough, they dont win when it counts. Gary really needs to get to the NCAA tourney this year to solidify his job in college park...GO TERPS

Hey it looks like Gary is on the recruiting trail.  He and Chuck visited National Christian Academy to see Dante Taylor (#9 PF-2009) and Will Barton (SG-2010) according to Scout.  There are 5 bigs in the Top 60 considering MD,  including 2 McDonald AA candidates.  You can only recruit perceived talent.  People forget that the 5 people recruiting class in 2002 was a Top 5 class and the 2003 class was number 2 behind FSU.  Gist was ranked #13 PF in 2004, and Ledbetter was a 4 star prior to the hip injury in the auto accident.  Shane Clark was the #19 SF in 2005 (but academically ineligible and enrolled at Villanova).  The 2006 class was ranked #19 overall.  Gilchrist was in-between classes according to some media, but according to Rivals would have put their 2007 class in the Top 30.  Scout has Gilchrist in 2008, which puts that class at #19.  To me, recruiting does not seem to be too much of an issue.

If you really look back at the post NC seasons, the first NIT year was largely attributable to John Gilchrist's selfish play/fake ankle injury.  He then departed.  The following year, McCray was ruled ineligible.  One or two more wins in either of these years and MD makes the NCAAs.  Are you faulting Gary for these players' actions?  Most of the 2002/2003 classes were highly ranked individuals.  You can't always coach them into greater players.  So Gary goes in 2006 and 2007 and recruits 4 year players because that worked for him in the past.  The problem is it takes time with these more coachable players.  I'm sure we'll see a resurgence next year and even higher achievements the year following.

I don't think anyone brought this up yet I tried to scan the replies. You don't just have a coach, you have a coaching staff. Gary has lost some good assistants in the past couple of years. Dave Dickerson was a really good coach. No they don't make the decissions at game time but they do alot in helping develope talent. Chuck and Keith are homers, but how do they rate?

Even though these type of players are looking and considering Maryland doesn't mean they are going to come to the school..half the time, Gary doesnt get the recruits he needs to fill the team to compete in the ACC. I was actually shocked with how well they did (standing wise).

Plain and simple.  There is no reason that so much talent should be escaping Maryland!

I'm reading all you guys talk about recruits. If  Md. twerps had bad players, how do you explain getting up for and sometimes beating  the good teams  and tanking against teams like American. Recruits are not the problem it's the coaching........ I have nothing against Md. just the idiot fans who looks for excuses and blame everything but the coaching / system. ......"Referees sucks!.......Duke sucks!.........North Carolina blows!
